Default Does anybody know.....

what that outer metal jacket around my Electricfly 600 motor is for??.....Its a sheetmetal jacket that snaps onto the outside of the motor.....It carries the manufacturer's label but other than that I cant see any usefull purpose for it. I took it off and everything seems to work fine but everyone tells me it needs to be there [but they dont know WHY] ?????

It is a Stator Ring (= Graupner Part #1156)- basically they change the electric field so that your motor runs slower (fewer rpm) and therefore draws less current. Useful only if you want extra duration at the expense of power!

It doesn't need to be there, unless removing it causes the current to exceed the capacity of the ESC or motor.

As Dr Kiwi pointed out, the stator ring changes the magnetic field of the motor. Just as the stator ring makes the diameter of the motor larger, it also conducts the magnetic field and makes it larger as well. Because the magnetic "energy" is at a fixed level, the larger magnetic field is also weaker. The weaker magnetic field requires less electrical energy to overcome, so the motor draws fewer Amps.

One thing about the stator ring is that its effect is only slight. To normal human perception, the effect is undetectable. The difference may only be an Amp or a few hundred RPM.

Default Thanks.....

Thanks for the advice folks.......Since its working fine I'll leave the stator ring off and save some weight. Suprising how few people know about this thing !!
