Default CD-ROM motor question

I am new to brushless and was interested in the cdrom motors. I was wondering if the cdrom motor could be ran stock after removing it from the cdrom drive? Or do you have to do the winding and magnet upgrades to get the power needed fo flight?
Thanks
Von

Hi Von,

you always will have to redo the winding. The magnets can be left, but new and stronger magnets are always better than the original magnet ring.

Have fun, Holger

Umm,I fly a bone stock cd motor on a pico tiger moth using a 9X7 prop.I don't think it would fly anything heavier. I remember some body on ezone did some tests on a stock cd motor, and got more thrust than they thought they would. However, they are not hard to rewind, and replace the magnets.Cheep too!!!!

Thanks guys.
A couple more questions on the motors. Where to find the magnets? and is there any where on the internet that explains the specific method and winding of the motor? I have a slowstick I would like to put one on.
At any rate these motors sound very cool.
Thanks again.

gobrushless.com has everything you need, but you will probably need a gearbox to fly a slowstick with a cdrom motor. Tiger moths and sub 10oz planes seem to work best when using a cd motor in direct drive fashion. Also just look on the web for info, there is a lot out there.

Checks & tests to perform BEFORE connecting your newly wound cd-rom / lrk motor to controller and batteries, they may save you from frying/toasting your €€€'s controller:
