Default how many volts can a 280 motor handle?

how many volts can a 280 ball bearing motor handle? i'm thinking about getting the electrifly corsair which comes with a 280 ball bearing motor with 4.6:1 gearing i believe. would the motor be able to handle my 3s kokams (11.1V)?

i've burnt out a few 370 motors before with this many volts. the speed 400 motors seem to be able to handle them fine though.

thanx,
brian

You would have to use a two cell lipo otherwise you'll burn the motor up. 280's can handle between 8.4 and 9.6 if your looking at Nicd's or Nimh's. I've found with brushed motors that 480's are the only motors that can handle a three cell lipo.

thanx bevo. i'm wondering if they're rated for up to 9.6volts, i MAY be able to push it a little to take 11.1 volts?

the speed 400's i'm using right now are only rated for about 9.6 volts (or less probably), but they've been running
strong on my 3 cell lipos for over 1/2 a year now.

I have a 280 w/ 4:1 gearing and run it on 8cell Nicads with a 9x6 prop. Motor draws about 3 amps.
The same motor direct drive w/ 6x4 prop on 8cells draws nearly 6 amps. Burned up at 6 amps when over 1 minute.
Conclusion: With higher voltage, probably OK geared so long as you don't exceed 5 amps.

It depends on which 280 you're talking about! If its the new 280 ball bearing "external" brushes motor on some of the new electrifly planes then it is wound for 3s lipos. I found it worked very well on the YAK 55 I have although after 8 flights or so I went to brushless just for the efficiency, the motor was fine and I'll probably use it on something else.
