Hello,
I have two HG2025-4266 that I have been using in a few different planes. They are great motors, with lots power....just one problem. They go through the brass pinion that is used for gearing, like candy!
Is anyone else experiencing this? At $5.50 per replacement, I could have bought 2 outrunners by now, and junked this whole Gearbox thing...[:@] <can you tellI'm frustrated>
...the good news is I have started to learn when one is about to go, a very high pitched whine emerges, and gets worse and worse.
Is there anything I can do to elongate the life of these Pinons? I have already programmed my ESC for Softest start, and no brake, and I am careful not to throttle up too quickly.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Sounds to me like you are setting up the gear to gear clearance too tight. Leave a little backlash between the gears. Also, when one gear fails, replace the gear it was mated to as it most likely has wear on the teeth not readily apparent to a naked eye. Insufficient gear clearance will burn up the gears in short order.

I agree; if one gear is worn, so is the other one. The plastic gear should wear out first. Try setting up the new gears, running them at about 20% throttle and hitting the plastic gear lightly with a heat gun:instant break-in....Jim

When ever I change out a set I always change both the gear and the pinion, and carefully mesh the gear to the pinion and make sure there is no binding...
Ok, so to tight... I don't have anyway to adjust this . Each slides on to a shaft that is fixed either in the gear box or the motor... Will hitting it with heat gun shrink the gear a bit and increase the clearance?

It will allow the plastic gear to conform to the teeth of the pinion gear without wearing down; the gears should run quieter immediately....Jim

I have a HIMAX HG2025-5300 that can not run more than 2 flights without stripping the plastic gears. I'm up to 6 gears now! I've owned this little beauty for 2 weeks. There is no way to adjust the mess in this motor. Tighting the 2 screws that hold the motor in place is not helping.
I'm lost! Help...

I have to say that the heat gun for a few seconds tip sounded great!...Did not help though.
My situation is weird though. Everyone talks about the plastic gear wearing out, my problem was always the brass pinion wearing out.
I wish I could help, but unfortunantly, I am just as confused and frustrated.
Footnote:Since starting this thread, I have gone to an axi outrunner. I LOVE IT! NO GEARS TO WORRY ABOUT!!!!...but I still have two of these himax gearbox motors, so if anyone has any good info, PLEASE Post!!!
Cheers,
~Tip

Try a Cobri gearbox.
http://www.e-flightline.com/gearboxes.htm
They have stainless steel pinions too, at 2.95 US$. They shouldn't wear.
I have a Cobri gearbox too, and an Himax 2025-4200 on the way. I buyed the Cobri even if quite expensive (mainly if you have to order it across the sea..
) because I heard several times on this forum that the original Himax gearbox have this problem.
And I can tell you that the Cobri is a real beauty.
Sometimes it's better to pay a little more, but one time only...
Cheers.

You're welcome,
just my 2 cents contribute.
Anyway, what about the Himax 2025-4200?
Which prop did you used? How many amps (and thrust...)?
I'm pretty curious, because, as I wrote, I have one of these on the way..
Cheers.

It is a great little motor...the gearbox and gears are the problem. I had my 2 motors in a bunch of different GWS Foamies. The best was the GWS Tiger moth 400. I added ailerons to the top wings...was alot of fun.
I live in Colorado where the air is abit thinner, so I propped up a bit, but most birds flew with 10x7 or 11x7.
I also flew them with Ph-25 ESC's....great match.
Cheers!
