CD ROM motor wiring?
Hi, I would like to use CD ROM motor, but it looks like brushless and has 11 wires?
Do I need to find motor controller inside CD ROM drive to run it?
Thanks, Mark

RE: CD ROM motor wiring?
Hi Mark-
Here is a discussion thread all about converting CD-ROM motors for R/C use:
[link=http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=127606]One hour CD_ROM motor construction[/link]
Despite the 11 wires coming to the circuit board, the motor stator should have only 3 windings. You therefore use a normal R/C-type brushless controller, and you do not use any of the electronics from the CD-ROM drive. The motor performance will improve if you rewind the stator with different (larger diameter) wire and replace the stock magnet with stronger ones.
All of this is discussed in the thread above.
You also purchase CD-ROM-based motor kits from vendors such as [link=http://www.gobrushless.com]GoBrushless.com[/link] and [link=http://www.strongrcmotors.com]StrongRCMotors[/link].

RE: CD ROM motor wiring?
I'd highly recommend StrongRcMotors.com
The two biggest advantages are:
1) Buy a can with a hub soldered on. Despite my best efforts, the press fit shaft does not last long if at all. The hub has a set screw to hold the shaft square.
2) Longer bearing tube. The short bearing tube on the goBrushless GBv can be a tricky mount. The longer tube provides many more options.
Also, check out the Komodo motors now for sale at strongRcMotors. I don't have one yet, but from talking with Don Strong... I don't think he would ever sell anything he didn't like himself.
