Default Type of motor supplied with Shogun helo?

http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXKYC6&P=RF

Site lists as a 400 electric motor. The motor delivered is stamped RS-380HP-5028 RN574Y17 and has 3 capicators on rear. one on each power lead to case and one connecting the two power leads (104Z / Y5V)

The owner ask if I could determine via RCU if it was brush or brushless type and if it requires break-in and should it be in water. He tried running it and noted that it did not seem to produce much power and he saw sparks inside housing.

All assistance appreciated. Limited electric flight in our area.

That's a brushed motor, not brushless.

You can tell it's brushed in at least three ways:
- It has two power leads. A brushless has three.
- It has capacitors. Brushless motors don't have them.
- Sparks are visible. A brushless motor has no brushes, so no sparks.

I'm no expert on breaking in brushed motors, but I know water break-in is a popular method.

jdetray is correct. That is a speed 400 brushed motor.
the 380 and 400 are the same diameter and therefore both classified as speed 400.
Some 380 and 400 motors have 'Special' windings or turns and/or special timing.
This is probably the case with the 380/400 that you mention.
If i am incorrect about this please speak up!

I seen a thread where a guy had a Guapner Speed 400 motor and found RS380 under the sticker....on the motor listed above (RS-380PH 5028) the last four digits is the winding specification "5028" is .50mm wire and 28 turns of armature windings per slot. I've read a lot of things like "RS380PH is the 6volt version and the RS380SH is the 7.2volt version" which is not true. Check this out to see Mabuchi's motor designations and their meanings: http://www.mabuchi-motor.co.jp/en_US...ic/t_0302.html
