Hissy:
There is a forum over on RCGroups call electric motor design and construction. A group of guys over there "Live" for making all kinds of motors--windings--and all the other things I dont understand about CDRs and brushless motors. Im pobably banned for life now!!!!!!!!!
Good Luck

To make a useful R/C motor from an old CD-ROM motor is a fun project, but it is not actually very cost-effective. Basically what you do is to keep the stator (the part that is wound with wire) and the rotor (also known as the can or bell). Everything else gets discarded.

Then you buy or make bearings, a bearing holder, magnets, a shaft, and new wire.

A less expensive way to enjoy the experience but without having to scrounge up the parts is to buy the $8.99 GBvâ„¢ 22.7mm Brushless Outrunner Kit from [link=http://www.gobrushless.com/]GoBrushless.com[/link]. The kit contains all the parts to build a small motor.

I'd highly recommend http://www.strongrcmotors.com/ One of the most frusterating parts about putting these together is press fitting the shaft into the can. At best, you get a working motor that is not very rugged. Strong RC motors sell cans with brass hubs that use set screws to hold the can on the shaft... much more rugged, much more maintainable.

That would be a fine choice, too. Don at Strong RC Motors is a great guy with excellent products. His cans are the best, although I have not had any significant trouble with the GoBrushless parts.
