Default Castle 80 Axi 4130 6s1p 3700 meltdown

Melted a Castle 80 while first taxi tests in Phoenix Su 31 with an Axi 4130/16 spinning apc 13x8 power from a 6s1p 3700 Flight Power all brand new...first taxi test!!! Did not get 10 seconds and could smell that smell of this is not good HOT HOT. Should I be using a BEC? How big? I've shipped the Esc off to Kansas(clicked my heels twice)so I don't want this to happen again. Any help with this out there

How many static amps were you pulling? I run an APC 19X8 with that setup. Even used a 9S pack! Of course that pulled way to many amps but was fun! Incredible acceleration!

I'm only running 4 cells, and I figured I'd use a UBEC just to be safe...

I have a 4120/14 in my Pulse XT w/ 4S1P 3200 Kokam's and a Phx 80
13 X 8E and seeing 55A. and right around 700W.

If you were using the BEC, you were totally out of the ball park on 6S lipo, no wonder it smoked[:@], I believe the max is 12 Ni cell 14.4V, your pack is 22.2V way too high for using BEC.

Yeah, I believe it says to use a seperate BEC (or UBEC ) if you are running 4 or more cells, and / or 4 or more servos? (something like that...)

Six 'O one...half dozen 'O the other...

The seperate battery is cheaper, especially if you already have one but heavier and takes up more space.

I used a UBEC (in the Pulse ) I got from Hobby-Lobby that will connect to the main Li-Po battery pack and power up to 8 servos...
It was $34.95 IIRC but only weighs an ounce.

I also have a Phx. 60 in a converted PT-40 trainer, that's using the same 3200 Kokam 4S1P's but we're only using 3 servos with that set-up.

Also using a UBEC in a Pulse XT. 60 amp CC , Himax 50 on 5s1p Makita 18.5 LI-ION batts. with no problems. Bought at the NEAT show Called Hercules by Western Robotics. Will handle up to 8 servos.

I agree with the ubec thing. I just happened to have a dozen extra rx batteries. (I been in this hobby a long time!)

Thanks Guys
Got the ESC back from Castle(super fast) there was a faulty circuit in it and they replaced it. I decided to run with a separate receiver battery on this setup and it works great now
