Default Trouble picking cost effective setup

Hi guys hate to be a bother but im scratching my head really hard on this one here and i wanna get it right the first time which means no trial and error please help if you guys can thanks

ok so here goes using a Futaba 6EXA TX (love this thing) with both planes

Got me two planes which i NEED to hop (sporatic wind conditions where i fly sometimes tosses my planes round at times so need more power so i can quickly correct and keep flying )

k first off i dont need these planes to become speed deamons not at all interested in setting records or breaking the sound barrier i just want some kick so that when the wind goes ape-**** i can hold my own.

ok so these planes are small and i suppose i may be asking much but id still like to know that i at least have some measure of a chance at remaining air borne dispite wind gusts.
so far im flying pretty high up and going good but i want some extra insurance so here goes.

oh and all my links are www.towerhobbies.com and batteryspace.com reference cuz im international ie: not in the USA and they ship direct to me so im good with them any help you can give guys please if its not too much trouble can you pic tower as the place for the parts? thanks

Two planes

One Multiplex Micro jet (love this little zoomer hehe)

Tested it on sunday, stock setup flying with this battery tower recomended ( http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXGBM2&P=M )

and loved the way it flew.. unfortunately its truly a brick that donst fly for more than two minutes and just know that when the winds kick up im gonna have some problems
so i need to hop it up a little..

was thinking of this battery

http://www.batteryspace.com/index.as...l=&strCompare=

which would make it an even heavier brick but at least id have more flight time

ok so on to motor and esc

now came up with some options (just so you dont think that im leaving it all to you guys :P )

Towerhobbies.com recomends this motor and esc

http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXMYL5&P=7

i also saw this one

http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXJCK7&P=ML

but since im on a budjet and i have two planes to hop up i did some digging and found that i prolly could use this instead

Motor : http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXNGX3&P=7
ESC : http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXKSY4&P=0

I chose this Silver seriese ESC because i am hoping to at some point upgrade to lipo batteries and conisdered this one

http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXGHE6&P=ML

still, just trying to cut cost anywhere and as i said no sound barriers need to be broken i just need some kick to fight some wind thats all

im looking at this prop

http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LX1678&P=7

i know nothing about the power consumption and calculations where props are concerned

I have tried to understand them but some how they jump over my head.. I figure id leave it to the experts this time.

im thinking these servos

http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXN679&P=ML

as i have read that the stock servos or the HS55's i have here on hand arnt going to be able to withstand the rigors of a brushless setup

i have no idea how to combat the hinge problem... or supposid problem which may arrize due to this hop up.. so if anyone can help me out here on how i can reinforce the foam hinge hey hit me with it please

was thinking of these control horns
http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXGWN8&P=7

im using this RX right now
http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXKYK1&P=0

considering changeing that out aswell as i have read that single conversion RX are prone to interfearances? any suggestions guys?

er i think thats about it i hope i diddnt miss anything

gosh this is getting to be a long post..

im really sorry guys i wanted to break this up into two smaller posts but did not want to annoy anyone so i just suck it all in here instead.

ok so

The second plane is a hobbico ventura AFR http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXGFK0&P=ML

sorry the link here is for the RTF turns out the ARF is discontinued...... bummer.

I guess stock either ran out or people coulddnt get their venturas setup right and complained.. (took me several trys to get mine right lol love it now though)

Right now im using its stock motor http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXGLP5&P=7
and this radio Rx http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXCRJ9&P=V
with stock battery http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXGLP7&P=M

This plane flys LOVELY with this setup but i wanna be safe and get a zippier motor to take me out of nasty wind gusts if need be

considering this battery
http://www.batteryspace.com/index.as...l=&strCompare=

yup same one as before hehe need more flight time.. even though for some reason the stock battery seems to last quite a wile IMO maybe its the RX and Speed combo i dunno but sure is much longer than the other plane the multiplex micro jet.

im looking at this motor
http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXLWX5&P=ML

or these
http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXGYC6&P=7

http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXJYZ4&P=7

now im not sure if its ok for the ventura as in powerful enough or whatever i need a brushless motor that would fly a speed 380 brushed motor plane nicely

im still thinking of the silver series ESC
http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXKSY4&P=0

i will need to change the radio on it (as much as i love the one its got.. too bad there isnt a brushless version lol)

im thinking this one for both planes
http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXCXM9&P=0

i was thinking that i should stick with the stock prop for the ventura

what do you guys think?
im gonna save up to get all this stuff if you guys think its ok.. or maybe take a small loan and get it all at once....

i picked what i thought might be good please dont bash me if i more than goofed in my selection guys :P

thanks for reading this painfully long post please help if you have time or can

thanks

Just had a chance to glace over your post before leaving the house and I would suggest lipos for that first plane.... You're adding an ungodly amount of weight to that plane... which, if the wing loading can handle it, would enhance it's wind defying potential a little but makes flying the plane much less enjoyable. Have you had any experience with lipos? I'm not sure what the policies are on sending lipo batteries over seas but I'm sure it's not a problem.

Looking at the 1100 mah battery you picked out at 6 ounces you could save a whole lot of weight and add a whole lot of flight time to your brushless motor with this:
http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXMDM9&P=0

You of course would need a charger to charge lipo batteries and great care would need to be taken with it. However the performance and added voltage of the pack would severely improve the performance of either of the two motors you've picked out

The maximum current of the first motor set you've picked out is 25 amps so the lipo you selected won't deliver enough to run the motor without having serious potential of damaging your lipo battery and therefore the rest of the plane

Wow that explains something
Thanks.

I only have now just realized what the difference between the battery pack which i selected
http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXGHE6&P=ML
and the one you suggested was
http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXMDM9&P=0

same cost but the discharge rates are different
mine was at 8C and yours at 20C
given that the motors and ESC are both rated round 25 amps it makes sence to me now why that "C" number was important and why you said it would wreck the Li-po

.. sadly i have zero experience with lipo's and have been a little apprehensive about them due to the amount of care which must be taken with them;

cant over discharge them
cant bump them (and with high winds there is a possibility of me kissing the ground- thank god i learned to fly high now :P haha)
cant over charge and must charge right after discharge? (that might be a prob as i dont live near my flying field. Oh well, hurray for car chargers!)

its because of all of this i thought that i should tuff it out and stick with Nimh for a while...
in all honesty and im no expert but i think the planes wing can take that stress its a rather thick wing... but your totally right
it will be an even heavier brick of a plane and i might aswell get into the lipo stream of things now and get it over with :-/

and off course true to form when one answere is found an other pops up

my question is about that battery though http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXMDM9&P=0

according to what im reading, turns out i would need a blancing charger of sorts and tower recomends
http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXMGS7&P=M

but the description of this cell blancer under detailed "specs" for the item state that i would need a compatible lipo charger to use along with it.

This means to me that i would need this along with it
http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXHNW5&P=M and some kind of adapter for converting it's out put connectors to match the input connectors on the ballancer

am in correct in assuming this?

i stumbled upon this let me know what you guys think of it
http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXKSY1&P=ML

thanks again im so glad i posted before buying man saved my self some head ache but good!!!!

so again... im cool with either motor and ESC? in that case im going cheap hehe

Default RE: Trouble picking cost effective setup

In regards to lipo batteries you do need to take a lot of care with them but in my experience they are worth the effort. True a hard crash may very well cost you the pack if the pack is damaged at all. I have the same balancer you posted a link to and have had absolutely no problems with it... It does a really great job on my 800 mah 2 cell lipos all the way up to my three cell 2100+ mah lipos

I don't however have experience with the charger you posted. Looking at the specs and the reviews that many have given it, it seems like a fine charger. I would shy away from the first lipo only charger as I'm not a big fan of one trick pony devices. For this I've got the original triton from the same company.. it has since been replaced by the triton 2 and also they released the triton jr for those with smaller needs. The one you posted has many if not all of the capabilities for a little less cost it appears. My advice is to buy connectors for every battery type you have while you're ordering parts over seas anyway... then when you recieve your things you won't be helpless without battery connectors later, something I have done a time or two myself

Do you happen to know what your total weight on the plane is? This will help decide what motor would work best with the plane. Many here on the forum will be able to tell you the characteristics you can expect after they know the weight of the plane and the 'kv' rating of the motors you posted

Default RE: Trouble picking cost effective setup

ok lets see the weight of the model (i dont have a scale so im taking this from the website)

microjet
Weight: 18.7oz (530g) w/480 motor, 8 cells

this should actually be heavier since im using it stock right now with a 400 speed motor.. but id say thats about right with the 480 motor
the cell im using for power weighs
Weight: 3.35oz (95g)

but thats going to change with either the lipo new nimh cells or that same cell pack above..

im still doing costing for those lipos

and im corssed between the
triton jr
http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXMAH9&P=ML

and the multiplex chargers
http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXKSY1&P=ML

i just dont know which to pick man ahhhhhhhgggggg

i also stumbled accross this motor setup which they claim is perfect for that specific jet
http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXJCK9&P=7

but at 150 Us

im still leaning toward this combination cuz it (to me) appears to be more powerful AND cheaper
Ammo motor
http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXLWX5&P=ML

sliver seriese ESC
http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXKSY5&P=7

im undecided man im just lost

it would help if i totally understood what i was doing

Default RE: Trouble picking cost effective setup

hey just thought id chime in with some more information

found this thread here
http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_51...tm.htm#5150410

cleared up lots for me

its a pitty that lipo you recomended is completely out of stock on towerhobbies
so ill hold off on lipo for a little while and build a three nimh packs with these
http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXKYC9&P=0

from what i read in that Thread above
it should be ok (im hoping... lol)

ill go with the most powerful setup
http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXJCK9&P=7
maybe get the motor seperate and use a silver seriese ESC

its rated at 250watts plus

so thats more than 125watts per pound (if my final weight were at 2 pounds) at least enough to go virtical if i need to

dunno if the wings can handle it lol.. ill need to switch to lipo
soon after if it cant... (ill just get an other micro jet move to lipo and be happy)
the servos and control horns need to go for sure as for the hinge well... ill have to think of something fast :P

check out that thread let me know what you think
