Ultra R/C Yak 55 Motor Suggestions
I'm new to electrics, but have flown Glow for many years.
I purchased a NIB Ultra R/C Yak 55 3D plane 31" span.
I have no idea what motor, prop, esc, battery& charger to get for it. I will be looking to be able to hover & 3D.
I would appreciate your help with suggesting motor & related combo.
Thanks, Mike

Ok.
I like to BE SURE there is enough power. Overpowering a plane is much better than underpowering For really extreme/3D performance, and instant power on tap, you want to be around 170+ watts per pound of aircraft. With a Manuf. Flying weight at 14-16 oz. (assuming that is with battery), let's say 17oz to be safe, you are looking for a motor that is capable of giving you somewhere around 180 total watts of power and is specified to handle a 3cell 11.1volt LiPo. Battery, you are going to want a 3cell 11.1volt LiPo, something around a 1300-1500mah pack and at least a 13-15C constant rating, putting a burst C rating somewhere around 20-25C.
It looks like their combo package includes an inrunner setup and a gearbox. I always prefer the outrunner setup. Much easier, lighter and less parts On the prop., most manuf. will have a size recommendation based on the cell count or voltage of the LiPo you are going to use. That is always a good place to start, then you can prop. up or down based on testing. The ESC just needs to be able to handle the motor's max. burst amp rating, with some cushion. So as an example, if a specified motor is said to draw 17amps max., you want at least a 25amp ESC. A 20 amp ESC would work, but the 25amp is well worth the little extra $$'s to have the insurance.
Some Motor Options:
Torque 20T-1030 - 183 watts 16amp burst
E-Flite Park 450 - 175 watts 18amp burst

Are you recomending E-flite over Hacker? Just hear alot of talk about HACKER motors.
What are the advantages "pro & con"
