Default ESC "OPTO"???

I am looking at various brands of 80A - 100A ESC controllers and need some help on the terminology in the product descriptions. Some brands list two separate controllers for the same amperage. For instance, one is listed as a JETI 80A and there is another listed as a JETI 80A OPTO from the same supplier. Can someone tell me what the term "OPTO" stands for?

Thanks!

Default RE: ESC "OPTO"???

That usually means there is optical isolation between the control input (from the RX) and the power driver output (to the motor). This helps keep noise from feeding back into the RX from the ESC, and to some degree protects the RX if the ESC gets fried. Optoelectronic isolators are sort of like an infrared emitter & detector pair sealed up in one package (like the IR remote control systems for you TV, stereo, etc.). High voltages or noise on one side of the isolator doesn't affect the other side.

Here's a block diagram and a data sheet for a Sharp opto isolator if you're interested:

Default RE: ESC "OPTO"???

Paul,

Thanks for the quick and most informative reply. I now understand the circuit and what it does. It appears that an ESC with the OPTO circuitry is indeed a good thing. I am off to purchase my ESC.

Thanks again,

John B.
