Default Question on brushless outrunner motors.

Hello all. I've been hunting for information for a while now. Outrunner motors (in particular, wheel motors) are fairly new technological trinkets, and info is sure hard to come by.

Basically, what information do I need to know before trying to calculate how much torque I need out of a motor? I know what speed I'm looking to achieve. I know how big the wheel is going to be. What I don't know is how much power I'm going to supply the motors with, because I don't know how much torque I'm going to need. I don't even know which way I'm going to build the motor, again due to the fact that I don't know how much torque I'll need.

Maybe I'm completely off base. Anybody want to help me out? Thank you!

Default RE: Question on brushless outrunner motors.

What is your application?

You need some indication of the torque. Pull application over the floor at desired speed and measure pulling force. If you can't achieve the desired speed, remember that torque goes up with speed squared. Divide by 4 (wheels). This will give you force per wheel. You know wheel diameter, from that you can calculate torque.

From the link given by Phil, it's best to start with this one, motor building 101, a must read:
www.gobrushless.com/kb
-> "basic overview" (1-5)

Motor building is not much of an issue here, I suggest you move your questions to the [link=http://www.rcgroups.com/electric-motor-design-and-construction-361/]Electric Motor Design and Construction[/link] subforum. And/or to the[link=http://www.yahoogroups.com/group/lrk-torquemax]diy motor builders[/link] group (don't worry, I took care of spammers in that group)

Vriendelijke groeten Ron

And if you have some time left, read/scan this sticky "How do brushless motors work":
