Default Exceed Monster Power 160

I just acquired an Exceed RC Monster Power 160. for a ridiculous price, and think it might just be a good power choice for my 80" T-34C. I am wanting to turn an 18x12, or so 3-blade prop at around 6500-7000rpm max.
Looking for info from those with experience with this motor. What speed controller are you using? What size packs? What prop? What plane?
Results???

A Castle HV-45 and a 9S 4800mAh pack will work nicely.

An HV-45 sounds too small.

Oh yeah, it will draw ~70 amps or so.

The HV-45 will limit the motor to 40 amps, which is all that motor can handle without super-heating. It will hit 40 amps on the ground but drop off quick in the air. At full throttle with a 16x10 3-blade it only pulls about 18 amps in level flight from a 9S 4200mAh lipo and wasn't that fast so I went to 12S, but you don't want 10,000rpm on your 18" prop. If you want more acceleration and have the bucks an HV-85 would be good too.

I don't think that it is correct to say that an esc will limit the amount of current a motor pulls. This idea will bite you.

Some ESC's have current sensing, some don't. Set the HV-45 to sensitive current sensing and soft cut-off. It looks good on the meter and I haven't burned up an ESC or battery yet.

Now you tell me! You are correct, some ESC's don't have current sensors. I never really realized that the Castle Creations did - explains why mine haven't caught on fire like my cheaper ones have.

I definately don't want to limit my amps to 45. Motor is designed for 60 amps, with a burst of 78 amps on 9s or 10s.
Been doing some research, and the spcs on this motor are the same, as the E-Flite Power 160, right down to idle current, resistance, weight, and size. Hmmmm.

I think it's the same as my china motor, but maybe not. I'd like to see an rpm vs amps plot of that one because mine tops out at 40 to 48 amps, going to 60 just makes more heat and no more rpm.

Here is a Chinese made BEC that should work.

I have used used BEC's from this firm and they work OK. They may be RF noisy though. I would recommend using 2.4GHZ

Yes, I did. I put it in my Midwest AT-6 Texan done in NM National Guard colors. Wingspan is 83", weighs 14 lbs. I'm only running it on 6s 5000Mah. I am using a Hobbywing 150a 6s esc that I got with the motor. At the time I first posted, I thought I would need more cells to get it going, but it's only drawing about 46 amps. Turns a 20x15 APC prop, and can get 2 fights of about 7+min of good flight time without stressing batteries.
This bird was flown with a 2.0 Brison gasser for several years before the conversion to electric. I have decided this will definately be the motor for my T-34C.
Here's a video of the 2nd flight.

I bought this motor from Hobby Partz http://www.hobbypartz.com/mo1602brmo.html at a better price than it is now, even though i knew it would be alittle big, but i am putting in a Golberg 67" Yak and i was going to run on 10s but maybe 6s would be better, as esc are cheaper that are not HV ESC's. Looks like you didnt need anything near 150 amp esc. I also have a AT-6 that Live Wire built for me http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_8668413/tm.htm it is going to run with a G38
Any other info on this motor let me know, it sure helps when you are trying something new
Thanks

I got the motor and and esc from a local who was selling out. $100 for both, and they were brand new.
With 6s, I am only turning 4400 rpm, hence the 15" pitch prop.
I have read about guys running the E-Flite Power 160, on 10 and 12s turning up a 22x10. They claim it has same power as a 50cc gasser on 12s. Supposedly this is the same motor.
BTW, this Texan was originally built & flown with a G-38.

I'm not pushing it at all, it doesn't get even a little warm, turning a 16x12 APC Pattern prop on 12S.

I also bought the Monster 46 http://www.hobbypartz.com/monsterpow...ess-motor.html and wanted to use the same batteries, i would just series 2 for the 160. that is why i was thinking 10s, i just just could use 2 5s batteries, i was going to go around 4000 mah, on 10s that should give plenty of flying time. What does anybody think of that idea?

And by the way Terry, it looks like the 160 flew the AT-6 just fine, no poblems at all!

Thanks

Yeah, there's waaay more power available, but I don't need it to fly the T-6. I got the motor cheap and had the bird already. The T-34 I am building is very similar to the T-6 in weight and deminsions, so I think I will be using 6s on it as well, if I can find a prop with enough pitch to fly on 6s. I need an 18" 3-blade prop for scale, and I think I will need about 14" pitch. I have found 18x12 3-blades, but not 18x14s as yet. If I don't find one, I may need to use 7s or 8s to get the rpm up.
here's some pics of my T-34:

That motor is great for a wide variety of aircraft from 8 to 20 pounds. It will handle props from 14 to 22 inches or so and run on 4 to 12 cells.

Dave,
I want to use the same batteries with the 160 and the 46 also, so would 4s or 5s be better? I would series them for the 160 so 8s or 10s, and i was thinking 4000 mah batteries, your thoughts

Thanks

Yes, almost all of my packs are 3s 2100mAh 16C. I parallel and series them to get what I need. The combinations I've used: 3S1P, 6S1P, 6S2P, 9S1P, 9S2P, 9S3P, 12S1P and 12S2P.

Is it possible to adapt a nice spinner to the prop adapter?? Something affordable....not an expensive Tru-turn or anything like that. And where can I get a spare prop adaptor for the motor? Does the E-Flite Power 160 adaptor fit?

If anyone can find a prop adaptor long enough for a normal prop and spinner backing plate, let me know.

I bought the great planes 8mm adaptor and made a longer collet for it. My machinist wants $65 for a steel one I designed, I didn't get any made.

So is the only option a nice prop nut??
