Either way would work. Personally I use an Ultimate BEC from Kool Power for any a/c whose ESC can't handle the servo load. If you need weight to balance the bonanza, then go ahead and use a separate receiver battery.

FYI, since you are new to electrics, you must disconnect the red wire between the ESC and the RX in either case. Just use a pin to lift the locking tab on the plug, bend the red wire back and wrap it in electrical tape.

Another hint: all external BECs that I've seen tell you to ire the power lead into the esc battery leads. I make up an short adapter (as short as I can) to match the ESc and battery leads. The BEC is soldered into this adapter and can then be easily moved from one a/c to another. If you need a photo let me know and I'll get one.

You will eventually figure out that it is easier to standardize all you connectors regardless of what one they originally come with. I will not get into the fight over which one is better, just choose one that you like and go with it.

Hope all this helps,
Walt

A Castle 10A UBEC should do it... here is a crude mock-up to show the connections

You must have a "battery" channel available?

usually you can use any channel with a "Y" harness. You don't say what brand of RX you are using, but many of them have a combined battery and last channel port.
