Electric SkyBird RES

Hi,

I am building a Skybench RES Skybird Sailplane that I want to make electric. The plane is 132" WS, weighs 68oz (w/o power), and has 1340 inches of area. After reading many posts the following is what I'm planning on using for electric power. Please let me know if this is the right setup and any recommendations for changes.

AXI 2820/10 brushless motor
Jeti 40 amp controller
Kokam 3s2p 1200 mha Li-Po battery pack (total 2400 mha)
Graupner 12x6 folding prop

Thanks for your help! :)

For the motor/prop combo, you have about half enough battery. Kokam 1200's are rated at 5C continuous (1200mA * 5 = 6 Amps), and your motor/prop combo will draw around 40A (educated guess, but it's right at the limit of the motor's capacity). 3S2P will give you 12 Amps continuous, and about 20 Amps in 10-second bursts. You need 3S4P, at least, and lots of throttle management.

Total AUW with motor & battery will be around 96oz, or at least that's my best guess. The motor and prop combo should be more than adequate on 10 cells to haul it skyward with that much wing area.

Matt,

Thanks for the reply. I will up the the battery to 3s4p.

Do you think it would be better to go to a smaller prop or just manage the throttle? The plane is definately a floater.

Thanks,
Steve
