ESC Soft Start?

Being new to the electrical power systems for our models, I am trying to understand what is meant by the "soft start" feature in some ESC's. This would be with respect to a fixed wing application not a helicopter. If the ESC has an 8 sec soft start does this mean that it takes 8 secs for the prop to reach full speed or a predetermined rpm? And is this feature adjustable? it seems this feature could be used to add more realism to the prop speed at initial startup, if I am understanding it correctly.

Thanx, Mark

Soft start is used for helicopters. It limits how fast the throttle is advanced to a point. As an example, you are a 0 throttle, helicopter is sitting there, you slam full throttle, most likely you just stripped the main gear. Now with the slow start enabled, you do the same thing and the throttle slowly advances to about 1/2 throttle.

I did not know i had it setup on a ESC I was using in a plane. It was sort of neat, yet if you were doing touch and goes, not so much fun. Hit the throttle, wait for it to power up through the slow start. Next flight i programed out the slow start.

Thanx, Buzz. Do you know if you can change it to speed up to something less thatn 1/2 throttle?

Soft start can be a blessing or a bane.
It seems that some motors need more power than others to start properly.
Mine seem to be happiest with a soft start.

Only ones I have had are standard start, soft, medium and super soft start. I have used the program box to change the programming.

In my original question, " If the ESC has an 8 sec soft start does this mean that it takes 8 secs for the prop to reach full speed or a predetermined rpm?" Does 8 sec refer to the duration of the soft start feature, or is this the time you have to leave the throttle at idle, during flight, before the soft start feature reactivates?

Thanx, Mark
