esc compatability

I salvaged my 480 kv brushless from a bad crash that fried my 18 amp esc. I installed the motor in a new plane with a used 30 amp esc. the result is the motor barely turned and both esc and motor heated up. I quickley disconnected battery. How can I tell if the problem is the esc or the motor or both from the crash? Can you use a larger esc then is necessary for the motor?

The only part I know is yes, you can use a larger ESC.

Does the motor turn freely? Are the bearings smooth? Was this with or without a prop?

As log as the connectors fit each other, you can use a larger ESC. I used my 60 amp for a motor that only needed a 20amp.

Buzz.
