My outrunner actually reversed rotation during flight!

I need some thoughts as to what happened to me recently. I was flying my Seagull mini MXS-R. It's using a 450 size outrunner and a 30 amp esc (Tornado). The esc's bec states that it can handle up to three standard servos. The plane has 5 mini servos.

I was powering along, then pulling straight up until suddenly the motor stopped as if the battery voltage was too low. This was just a couple of minutes into the battery (3S Lipo) which is new and was fully charged.

I pulled the throttle back and regained control only to find something really strange was happening when I tried to throttle back up. Not daring to keep on flying I landed in the rough, breaking the undercarriage off. When checking the controls on the ground I found to my surprise that throttling up started the motor in reverse rotation! No wonder I had troubles flying it in after the inflight stop!

I unplugged the battery and after replugging it back in found that the motor again was rotating correctly. So, is it actually possible that an overloaded bec can do this? If not, what?
The same motor/esc/battery combo has been flown in other Seagull XRay earlier and I never had any issues there.

What was the 3S battery capacity, C-rating and voltage state of the battery after you crash land it? Did you check it up?
