Wattage Super Impress w/Cobalt 400 motor
 

I am just starting to put this thing together, and have a few questions about the motor and battery. I read the other posts about the cobalt 400. Does it need a break-in to run well? If so, how do you do it? A C battery soldered to it and glass of water? The instruction book lists a 1300 Mah NiMH as suggested, yet the part number listed is for a 1300 Mah NiCd. Would a 1600 Mah NiMH do for this setup? Any info would be appreciated.

You can use the water method, for ten minutes or so [without the prop of course]. Otherwise just run it free (without prop again) for an hour or so.

The best battery pack would be 8 cell KAN 1050 [6oz) or 1300 (7.4oz), depending on how much weight you feel you can carry.

Having seen other posts on that aircraft/motor, the old adage applies - "the lighter the brick the better it flies". At least initially I would make every effort to trim the AUW as much as possible.

To add to the Doc's advice, you want the brushes to conform to the commutator for maximum contact area. That is, they have a nice concave curved shape. New brushes are flat on the end. Run the motor a while, like 15 minutes, then carefully slide one of the brushes out and inspect it. Keep checking the brushes from time to time. When they're mostly rounded out, you can go flying.

If those 1600mAh NiMH are AA cells from WalMart, save 'em for your digital camera. They are no good for electric airplanes. Use the KAN cells.
