Electric Motor ?'s

Last fall I bought a Wattage Super Impress with a Cobalt 40 motor, to assemble later this spring. Then later on I ran into a Goldberg Electra ARF. While I was assembling this bird, I fould that the 550 motor supplied with the ARF would not fit in the motor compartment - It was too wide. I would have to remove what was already there and built a larger box, or get a smaller diameter motor. What about the Super Cobalt 40 that is in the Super Impress? Is it strong enough to fly the Electra, or will I have to get a small brushless motor? Thanks in advance for your replies.

RE: Electric Motor ?'s

That surprises me because the Goldberg Electra has been shipping with that same 550 motor since it was introduced many many many moons ago. I remember the Electra being around when I was a kid.

If the motor doesn't fit, I'd complain to Goldberg first and foremost. Somebody messed up the assembly of that plane, and they should be obligated to fix the issue. I've heard of including a motor that wasn't powerful enough, but never a motor that was too big to fit in the airframe. That's absurd.

Geared, with an 8-cell battery pack, I don't see why the Electra wouldn't fly on the Cobalt 400. You can get a planetary gear drive so the motor will fit in the slender fuselage, and run a big diameter prop. This plane flies slow, so you need lots of thrust, not speed.

RE: Electric Motor ?'s

Matt, thanks for your reply. I appreciate you info. I know the plane has been around for a long time. I have a kit from the 70's or early 80's that I never got around to building, that is why I jumped on the arF so quick. I guest I will send them an e-mall and ask about the solution to my problem. I thought it would be faster getting a response here. Thanks again.
