Himax 5300 Kv Motor
 

Hey guys, Iv'e got a Himax 5300 Kv motor for my e-flight ultimate. I have heard some bad things about it though far as it getting battery packs hot and cutting out the speed control after like 2 minutes. I have researched it a little though and have found that the 7.4 volt packs should be used instead of the 11.1 volt to keep them from getting hot. I am very new to all of this, and I need to know if I should take this one back and get the 4200 Kv motor. I want the power but I dont want to only be able to fly for 5 minutes either. Any advice at all would be great, I appreciate it. Thanks

Do you mean 2025-5300 or 2015-5100? The larger 2025 motors are overkill and heavier and require bigger batteries... the high kv motors will work ok on 2s if you can really keep the weight down but also work ok with smaller props on 3s. You just have to lessen the load when using the faster spinning motors with 3s packs or else you can overheat some part or other.

For example, I have a 2015-4100 and 2015-5300 (the eflite equivalents) and I could run the 5300 at 6.6:1 gearing on 3s but had to go down to a 9 inch prop with a low pitch like a 9x4.7 as I recall... the 4100 on 3s can use an 11x4.7 prop. They both hover a foamy, the bigger prop on the 4100 is just more efficient doing it. If I tried the big prop on the 5300 I'd just burn it up in short order. The 5300 on 2S worked ok but could barely hover my plane because I only had older first generation 2s lipos. I'm sure current 10C rated 2s lipos would be better and I might try that. Then I could use the bigger 10 inch or whatever props on the 5300 and be lighter because of the 2s battery.

I have been very pleased with my direct drive HiMax 2812/0650 on my Eflite Ultimate. With an APC 11x4.7 SF prop, CC 10 ESC and TP 3S 1320mah li-po it will fly for 20+ on a charge and hover for over 15 of that. If I had to do it again I'd get the 2812/0850 and a CC 25 ESC though for just a bit more power. The direct drive motors are very quiet, cheaper and have no gears to strip.

An 11x7 prop gave me a bit more power but also caused the ESC to cut out occassionally due to high current draw. In the end I decided to stick with the 11x4.7 for an additional 5 minutes of run time.

I have 3 of the 2025-5300's in GWS Warbirds. I run them in a 5:1 gear box with an APC 9 x 7 prop and a 3s1p1500 10c PolyQuest lipo
with no problems. You just have to keep the rpm's down with the higher gear ratio's and larger props and make sure you have good air flow.
