ESC Polarity question....
 

Just putting together my first electric plane and I have a quick question,

I have an RB ESC plus speed controller with a black and a red wire coming out of it which I assume are the power wires!?!?!

I have a Li po battery with a red and black lead coming out of one end (assume battery charger end as the connectors fit!) and black, red, yellow and blue wires coming out of the other. I have read all instructions and can't figure which battery wires connect to which esc wires.....

Not sure if I have given too much or too little information or whether what I have written makes any sense but I am a complete beginner on the electric front.

Please help.

Teh end with just red and black should be the Battery connection and the other should be the power to the motor if you are talking about a brushless set up. I would search the web for the ESC you have and see if you can find more info on it.

One end of the ESC goes to the battery, the other end goes to the motor. They should be labeled, and if you are using a brushless motor it will be easy to tell, cause the motor end requires 3 wires. The red and black lead of your battery (should be the fatter wires) connects to the battery side of your ESC. Make sure you have the positive and negative matched up from the battery to the ESC or your battery will blow. The other tap on the battery with the smaller 4 wires should have a little black plug, or white plug on it already. That is the balancer plug, used to keep the battery in balance after flights and while charging. It is not used to connect tot he ESC.

There are brush motor controllers and brushless motor controllers. In either event the end with two big wires and the signal cable is the end that connects to the power battery. If the other end has two large wires, it is a brush motor controller. If three wires, it is a brushless motor controller. Under no circumstances should you try to use a brush motor with a brushless controller, or vice versa.
