break in using water glass
Hi,
I've recently read in the magazines (Quiet Flyer, Backyard Flyer) about breaking a new motor in by running it with 3 or 4 cells. They suggested to submerge the motor in water while doing this. Doesnt this immediately create all sort of short circuits, knocks the battery out and destroys the motor? Dirk |

Not if the water is reasonably pure. Disolved salts are what makes water conduct. Get a bottle of Deionized water at the grocery store and use that...

Even tap water is a very poor conductor at our low voltages.

Hi all,
This procedure really works well, but try not to use water that's TOO pure. The dissolved minerals seem to act like the grit on sandpaper. Here's a good link on the subject: http://marina.fortunecity.com/tidal/192/tricks.htm |

I use tap water with a little dishwashing liquid in it. Run it about 10 minutes on 2 D cell batteries. When the water gets dirty I run it again in the clean water then blow dry the motor put some fine oil on the end bushings and the motor will do you well for a long time.

I have done the water break in on a couple of motors and it is quick and easy. I have read that you should not do it with ball bearing motors. I have done three BB motors so far and have not had a problem. I make sure to dry them and then oil it.

Just maybe it's a 4.8 or 6 volt motor try lower voltage cause
everybody isn't wrong. CU |

After running motor in water, Shake it out then drop in alcahol. Let soak for a few minutes, then blow out with compressed air. If not then wait till air dry, oil and you are ready. We did recievers and servos in boats that flipped and sunk.
Woulden have tried it myself till a Futaba rrep suggested it RAGBAG |

Yes Yes I even put a drop of oil on the bearing before also.
On motors that have BB i take a eye dropper and put water on by hand. What happens the water washes away the carbon witch supports the copper in the brush makes it much faster and cleaner but you can do without water. In the pro shops they use a stick abrastive to help especialy big aircraft genators 300a + a pencial eraser will help cleanup the comuator also.CU |

In one of the many schools that I went to, I was taught that pure water is an insulator. It is the impurities that carry voltage. I worked in a marina at one time and when a boat was swamped the bilge pump would still work even with the batteries under water. Batteries are plural because some of the bigger boats carry more than one battery
