6s lipos on Astro model 210 brushed speed controller.

I have a 13 year old multi engined scale model & want to keep it flying.

The original nicads are now cactus & I want to fit lipos. 4 of the motors currently use 16 nicad cells through an Astro model 210 speed controller & the rated voltage on these is 19.2 volts (obviously much higher straight off the charger).

A 6s lipo is rated at 22.2 volts, again higher off the charger. The speed controller is rated at 25 volts, 45 amps.

Any experience or thoughts? I would rather not blow it up as brushed speed controllers in the larger sizes are becoming much less common. Thanks in advance - John.

wow thats some serious power! not to mention cost. id love to see how this thread develops.. if it were me id upgrade the motors to brushless if possible.. (expensive though) It would make your set up more efficient interms of flight times and you may not need as much battery power as you initially thought too. I hope someone else can shed some more light on this as it would take me way too many calculations Im not so good at it yet.

Anyone? - John.

You would need a speed control that has a cutoff for lipo batteries or get a lipo cutoff to prevent damage to the lipo cells. Why not just get a couple of 8 cell nimh packs ?

Thanks Greg, Astroflight finally got back to me & stated the speed controllers could handle the slightly higher voltage.

As for the cut off voltage I plan to just time the flights VERY conservatively & land at about half of the battery's capacity.

This will still give me an easy 10 minutes flight duration with the bonus of only 1/2 an hour to recharge back to full. - John.
