I have the ElectricFly 41" Edge 540 with a Super Tigre .10, 10/6 or 9/6 prop and I am not happy with the vert climb. Can someone tell me if it will be worth the expense of buying the E-Flite Power 10 or will it not make a difference.

The E-flite Power 10 is rated for waaay more power than a Super Tigre .10 can handle. The E-flite is said to be good for 375W, maybe even 450W... I have not completed some tests on the Super Tigre .10 but I reckon it is probably good for no more than 250W.

Hi Dr. Phil!
I am looking at the Super Tigre .10 for a Vintage Kyosho Shike Commander Twin that I am converting to electric. am new to electric and cant seem to find any motor data to fit this need.

It will fly grossed up at about 4.25 pounds and I feel that I need motors that will put out at least 200 watts each on 3 cell lipos. The problem is that clearance to the fuselage allows only 7 inch, maybe 8 inch prop diameter. I wonder if you have any data on this engine with smaller props.

I think the Kv will be too low for successful use of 7-8" props on only 3s. The couple of tests I ran with the SuperTigre .10 showed that it drew just under 20A/210W with a 10x6 GWS HD and around 28A/290W with a 10x8 GWS HD. I imagine that, on 3s, it would only draw 15A or so with 8x6. Now maybe you could run something like 8x6 on 4s and get the power you need???

72g Suppo 2217K/6 (1500Kv) might be ideal for 3s use and 7"-8" prop.

7x5 APC E:
10.7v, 19.80A, 213W, 13320rpm, 63.1mph, 860g, 30.28oz, 4.04g/W

7x7 APC Sport:
10.8v, 21.20A, 227W, 13110rpm, 86.9mph, 757g, 26.66oz, 3.34g/W

8x4 GWS HD:
10.7v, 19.30A, 207W, 13380rpm, 50.2mph, 988g, 34.79oz, 4.77g/W

The st .10 is rated at 320 watts constant, and 370 watts surge. Suggested or sample power setup on the manual shows 30 amp esc, 3s 2100mah batts, with 10x5e prop, but also in the specs for props it says 10x7-11x7 suggested props. All I know, I replaced my parkzone corsair brushless 480 960kv motor with the st .10 and with stock prop (9.5x7.75)I have unlimited vertical now. Not sure how it compares with the eflight power10, but for the money it really brought out the warbird in my corsair, plus it feels a lot lighter (not sure, no specs for parkzone 480?)and is a lot shorter length wise. Good luck with whatever you decide!

Thanks for the replies. I purchased the Power 10. Took the Supre Tiger .10 off my 41" Edge 540T and installed the Power 10 and the power was unbelievable. The .10 is not in the same class as the Power 10.

Unfortunately it does sound about right... that motor is bogging down with such a large prop... and that is all you are going to get out of it (and not for long since I fear the motor will fry). Think about it: that motor's Kv is around 1205Kv... so if your 3s pack is at 10.8v under load... with no-load your motor would try to spin at 10.8 x 1205 = 13000rpm... with the load of an 11x3.8 it is only managing 6900rpm which is ~ 53% of Kv x V... rule of thumb says anything less than 75% of Kv indicates overloading... QED... you need a smaller prop... I'd suggest a 10x6 GWS HD at most (it manages ~ 70% of Kv x V).... better yet a 9x5 GWS HD which at 9690rpm, manages the magic 75% of Kv x V.

The st .10 is rated at 320 watts constant, and 370 watts surge.

It might be rated at that, but since it can't manage much more than 200W without frying... the ridiculously optimistic manufacturer's rating is meaningless.

Thanks Doc! Very good information. Several of us have taken the Hobbyzone styrofoam Cub and modified it with ailerons and a bigger motor. One that seemed to fly very well is hanging up in the hobby store. It has an 11 x 3.8 prop, so.... I just copied him. Still haven't flown it but I may just change props first.

UPDATE: Seems like I had changed frequencies and the "new" transmitter did not give full throttle. Now when I tach the motor with the 11 x 3.8 I get 8000 rpm. Not sure how "full" the battery is since I have been using it the set up all the servos. 8000 seems like a lot better number to me.

I just bought a ST .10 and have a 9x6 prop and using a 3s 1300 lipo. My problem is after about a minute of run time my motor is getting so hot you can smell it. Why is the combo not working fo me and for some of you?

Was that a 9x6 APC SF.. if so I can understand the hot smell. After completing my tests on the ST .10 I'd only recommend 200W or so... any more and it gets very hot, very fast (even a 9x6 E might be too much on a good 3s pack)

Yes it is an APC 9x6 sf. I noticed that if I run it at about 3/4 throttle it won't get hot so I am thinking I need to drop another prop size. It is disappointing that the advertise and claim it can use a 10x7 - 11x7. Should have known better with as small as this motor is comapared to other .10's. Thanks for your help and input. Dr.

I tried to get info at the Toledo show but no luck, so, am writing you..
I have a Super Tiger .10 mounted in my old timer, Feather Merchant, 90" wing span, 4 3/4 AUW.. Before the first flight, I can spin the prop and have it go over several times, nice and loose, but after a flight, it seems a little tight and won't turn over by flippin the prop, any more than 2 or 3 times...
I'm using a 11.1V Lipo, 2200mAh pack with a 36amp ESC... Battery seems to get hot after a flight...
Any idea why this is happening?

The reason it won't spin freely after a flight might just be that if the ESC is connected it will be energized and this will hinder a free spin. If you disconnect the ESC does the motor now spin freely?

The hot battery on the other hand suggests that you are drawing more current than it can handle. What prop are you using? Is the motor hot too?

Well, your thought about the ESC is possible, only I've never had this problem with any of the electric motors I've have.. But, will check this next time out to the field..
As for Props, the instructions say anything from a 10/7 to an 11/7 works, well, tried the 10 first, not enough pull to get it moving, then tried a 10/8, still no pull so put an 11/8 on it and away we went... Have had several succesful flights with the Feather Merchant, but was a little concerned about the heat build up... All seems fine from last years flights and am ready to have a go at er arry, again this season....
I like this motor but the prop seemed to be awful large... Have a Watt meter and will check this out first time out...
I thought the Toledo show was a flop, as far as I was concerned... Lots of electric stuff now, but no booth for Super Tiger, which seemed funny to me as my last trip to Toledo in 06 showed one... This year, no ST booth, but a couple of other displays showed ST motors, but try to find someone to give me answers was useless.... Thus, I dug to find a place on the net that I could talk to someone about this, and lo and behold, you popped up....

Using a crude rule of thumb in reverse.... watts = cubic inches x 2000... this ST is good for about 200W-250W... so that makes it about a .10 - .12.

The optimistic 370W given in the specs is excessive... certainly there is no way an ST .10 would compete with my MVVS .15 (rated at 0.7HP = ~500W).

OK, after reading all the above on the ST 10, I've come to the conclusion, it AINT what it's cracked up to be.... So, maybe the Eflight 10 will suffice...
With an 11/8 E prop on it, it does fly my Feather Merchant, majestically, but not the old roar, climb and glide like i used to get with my Royal 40 nitro engine....
So, take it out of the ship and save it for something a little smaller, with a smaller prop...

Good mornin Doc.
Well, just for some experimentation with that ST .10, I found a 12/8 prop in my drawer, cut it down to a 10/8 and put it on the motor.... On the stand, I ran it up with my 2200mAh, 11.1V lipo and got the following readings....
At full throttle, AMps read 3 Amp
Watts read 301
WAH read 280
Forgot to tach it tho...
Battery was warm, motor also, ESC was fine...All this after about a 5 to 6 minute run on the stand..
With the modified 10/8, the pulling power seemed to still be there..

Sounds good: all I can say is that my test motor with a 10x7 APC E on it, drawing 23.70A/255W, from 23C it reached 70C after 45 seconds on the stand. With an 11x5.5 APC E it drew 26.90A/291W and from 32C it reached 82C after ~45 seconds on the stand. With an 11x7 GWS HD drawing 28.40A/310W, from 29C it reached 92C (smoke) after ~50 seconds on the stand.

This test motor is currently back with its owner and apparently performing well, so obviously these momentary peaks of heat were not due to any mechanical problem, and, long term, did not damage it at all.

Well, I found last year when flying the FM, I was getting up to 8 minute flights and on landing, all was hot, but the motor, left to cool down, would perform again and again for me... The slow spin after a flight had me wondering tho.. Still the same after the otherdays tests on the stand...
I am now at the feeling this motor is not what it was cracked up to be... Might be alright in a smaller aircraft with a smaller prop, but certainly not for my big FM....
While at Toledo this year, I came across a new manufacturer of motors, from Australia, and they have several motors ranging from (what they call), a 10, 20, 30 and a 40... Thrust Motors...(www,thrustmotors.com). They have a dealer in the States so it's a little closer for me to order one... Am thinking bout the Thrust 20 as a replacement for the ST... Have to do some further checking on specs to see if this is what i want.... Have you ever seen their site?
I'd be curious to see what your opinion on this motor woud be...

I reviewed a Thrust 20 some time ago, and was not initially impressed, but as you'll see, I ate some of my words in the second link! They are well-made, and expensive, but with good cooling should do a decent job.

In installed static tests, the ST .10 generates ~90% of the thrust of the Power 10 at exactly half the weight, it depends on your airplane which makes more sense.

The pictured config generates about 1.7 times as much power as the Power 10 at about 2/3s the price and the same weight, plus it is redundant without measurable overhead when running on one engine.

I have had my st .10 for some time now, run a 11/5.5 prop, most time 2 cell 1800mah, but have towed a Olympic 99 with a 3 cell 1800-2200 mah numerous times, when checked it was close to 300 watts, a little less than 30 amps, did numerous full power tows in a row with no problem, the batteries were a little warm, so was motor but not hot. Since then I have several friends that bought them no one has been disappointed. I have to have 300 or more flights on my motors, I am very happy with them. Several crashes, motor keeps on going. Designing another airplane and have looked at others, but what I don't like is everything else weighs so much more, some almost double!. Have to admit I have little other experience with any other motor, but as I look for an engine for my new design I keep coming back to the weight is so much more than the st .10.  Heard so many negatives things about them but all I can guess is you got a bad one, for the price/weight issue they seem like a pretty good buy to me.  any suggestions for a good replacement close to the same weight?  don't mind spending for a hacker or axi, but don't like the weight being so much higher for the power.
