if you get 10 gallons out of an engine your cruising, anymore is a bonus, most engines will get maybe 6-8 gallons.

also remember that a larger engine will use more fuel then a smaller one, so 12 gallons in a .30 engine might be similar to 7 gallons in a .12 engine.

remember these engines are only tiny, the .21 (example) in the name refers to how much of a cubic inch they are, so a .21 engine displaces .21 of a cubic inch, or about 3.4 cc, so even though 8 gallons may not sound like much, it's a fair bit of running time, in a .21 about 30 hours of run time, when you think about it thats a fair bit of run time out of such a high performance engine these glow engines are.

Well, with 30 hours it seems to be also quite expensive...

if the engine costs $300 and 8 gallons costs $320 then one hour of driving costs $20 just for engine and fuel.
No oils, tires and car wearing costs...

it's an expensive hobby, but to most of us an engine will last around 3-6 months, over that time frame the cost of the engine and fuel isn't much.

Also the engine isn't just thrown away if it's good
You just get a new piston and sleeve kit which should be a fraction of the engines cost

The most Ive gotten through any of my engines has been 8 gallons, and that engine still runs, but with poor compression (Its a TRX 2.5[:'(], no use replacing that...) The most ive ever heard someone run through their engine has been 19 gallons and thats someone on this forum 50 gallons is WAAY optimistic....

Have you ever tried to buy new piston/sleeve ?
Actually it's a half of price of new engine... and it is without rod.
With new bearings is the price close to new one

if well taken care of you should see 8-10 gallons, and yes you can rebuild them for a fraction of the cost

I like to buy a new engine unless the one I have is really awesome. I just like the shiny look of a new engine with no scratches on the head

Actually (if I remember correctly) my sleeve/piston kit cost less than 1/5th the price of my engine and when I snapped my rod it was about 1/20th of the price

*Rough calculations + vague memory

Though I can tell you I paid between $300-$400 AUD for my OS 15 CVR a few years back, and I think the sleeve/piston kit was $70 (never bought one, just priced it) and the rod was $23 AUD
Also, bearings you don't always need to do

yea, sometimes more. if you run it a little rich and use good fuel like o donnel, bryon, or sidewinder (other good brands out there too those were off the top of my head) then your engine will have a long happy life. 50 gallons is realy optomistic. even 20 is, but your new and you said you werent sure, so no problems

Of course, if you want to save serious dough, you can go electric. Electric has so many advantages than engines, and they will totally supercede engines by two fold soon.

But going motor over an engine, where is the fun in that? Nitro to me will always be my favourite, I have a special place in my heart for all things mechanical.

thats pretty good. you had me rolling.

well i would have to go back and calculate but i have a pro .15 that is 9yrs old and is still running strong. it has to be at least on its 10th gallon. i will also say i do use after run oil (hobbico), except for the past few times, and actually gave up on oiling the filter (just keep it clean). been running byrons since break-in.

Doubting Thomas's: I don't work for byrons ,yes it is at least 10 gallons, and no it is not rebuilt. original piston and sleeve.

I love nitro but it is damn expensive. I'm not poor but Im going to have to go electric for everything else. Right now I have one vehicle, a nitro truggy, I dont think Ill have more than one nitro vehicle at one time, just too much money. id like to go 1/5 scale gas but that will take a while. i like to run my car every day after work and with nitro that's just too expensive. I think electric will provide the daily fix and then I can break the nitro out on weekends like its a classic corvette on a sunday drive

Default Nitro engine lasting time

Depending on whether or not you take care of your engine (Using after run oil, Cleaning it, not running it too lean, using fuel with castor oil in it) then it should last up to 30 years, with a quality engine. I have a friend at my airfield who has an old OS LA .46 that is almost 40 years old. Of course, it has almost no compression, and is a pain to start, but it still runs!

Again, airplane engines are operated in a completely different environment than car engines. Nowhere close can they be compared in terms of longevity when you consider all of the factors apply completely differently between the two platforms.
