RE: engine advice
Depends on a few things. 1.) Budget, 2.) your tuning confidence/skills, 3.) rotostart, pullstart, or starterbox, and 4.) racing, or just messing around..

RE: engine suggestions
The most popular - and justifiably so IMHO - is the LRP Z28 Spec 3. There is a pullstart version, and a closed backplate "Truggy" version for starter boxes. The latter has a bit more power.
Then there is the Picco or Jammin 28. These will have more power than the LRP, but can be a bit more finicky to break in, tune, and they are a bit more pipe and plug sensitive. If you've up to the challenge, get the Jammin 28 with an 086 pipe from www.amainhobbies.com . Won't find a better power-for-price engine.. Need a starter box though.
If you want to try something new and possibly crazy, LRP has a new 30 engine out. Should be interesting. Also in pullstart or starterbox versions.
I personally like the LRP a lot - it's plenty powerful and then some, and it's extremely user-friendly. Downside is, it's a fuel-hog. I would suggest the JP-2 pipe if you go with the LRP. The stock Team Losi Muggy pipe is great too, and can be had cheap on e-bay. Same pipe btw as the RTR 8 buggy and 8T truggy(I'm pretty sure..)
There are a whole bunch of 21 more pure-bred race engines, but they tend to be more expensive.
There's the Go 25 (also at amain), a neat compromise between a 28 and a 21 - best of both worlds maybe...
Then, another personal favorite, there's the Mach 427. It's basically a smaller LRP Spec 3 - not quite as powerful, though not weak at all, but with much better run times(not as thirsty..) Extremely user-friendly, and dirt-cheap to boot. Can be had for $100 with luck on e-bay, maybe more like $130-145 in shops.
Besides amain, check out www.lstpartshouse.com .. They have the silver headed Mach I believe. If you can find one, the Sportwerks 26 V2 is identical to the Mach, and rrrripps too. I have an LRP, 2-3 Machs, and a SW 26, and I love all of them.
To add to the list, there are also the higher-ish end Italian engines - Novarossi, RB, etc..
Different people will have different opinions as always, but for me the best, most reliable "all-rounder" is the LRP Spec 3...
Good luck...

Re ports, depends.. I don't know exactly, but generally, I think the fewer the ports, the more torque, the higher the ports, the more top-end.. I'm sure there's more to it than that though.
As for altitude, I doubt any one engine is better than any other when it comes to that.
As for the CEN, if it's a 1/8 buggy or truggy, well, it depends on the same stuff it depends on for the OT.
If you're not doing serious racing though, and want something that's easy to use and has lots of power, get an LRP Spec 3. If you're on a budget, look for a Mach 427. If you're up to the challenge and want more power than the LRP, get a Picco 28. If you do want to do serious racing, then you want a .21, and man that's just a whole world of engines. I would say look around at www.amainhobbies.com among the .21's, see what you think might be interesting, then ask again.
Where to get them? www.towerhobbies.com or www.amainhobbies.com Before ordering, get the discount codes. If a Mach 427, ebay normally...

RE: engine suggestions
What was your normal operating temp? I haven't hit 300 yet, but i managed to get to 260, but I think it's running on the lean side and that was doing WOT across a parking lot

RE: engine suggestions
With the Sportwerks and mach 427 engines, just tune the engine you feel gives the best power then check temp. They aren't very temp sensetive. What I mean is whether you run it at 190, or run it at 300, it will not go out of you from running too cold or too hot. I had my 427 at 320 a couple times and changed the glow plug, and ran great for another couple gallons.

My SW 26 and two Machs and LRP all run cool.. I highly recommend the OS A5 - more top speed and cooler temps. With an A5 normal temps are 200-230.. I personally would get queasy over 260 or so.. With A5's and SW %25 that's just not normal with these SH engines.. I've run 30 minute mains with my silver Mach in races, and come off at 212 once and 232 on the same engine a few gallons and eight months later.. The Sportwerks in my Savage was at very similar temps, and it's still the same now that it's in my LST2.. 210-225 or so is ideal.

RE: engine suggestions
Both LRPSPEC3 and Picco .28 are definitely worthy contenders.

RE: engine suggestions
I have had both the Picco and the Spec3. I tend to like the spec3 better for overall performance, even though the Picco may be a better quality engine. I even favor the Spec 2 for it's bottom end performance,. Therefore I think my first choice is the lrp 30.

RE: engine suggestions
In my opinion, nothing in its class can touch a properly tuned Picco, but that is the catch. For a lot of people, tuning an engine does not include chasing down air leaks or fixing carburetors. The LRP 30 is indeed a beast, a big torque factory. I bought the spec and put it in my Savage, I love it. I bought the X or truggy version and put it in my Mugen and the love is not there. It seems to be lacking in rpm. I think the previously mentioned SW 26 or Machs are excellent engines as is the LRP 28. The twin sisters, Picco and Jammin 28 are the screamers for the money. A lot of guys are fighting too much power with them. Is there such a thing? Glen
