26% Carden Extra
1 Attachment(s)
Hello,
I bought a 26% kit last year. I finally started to build it. I'am going to power it with a First Place Engines 2.4 with the C.H. conversion. My whole goal is to keep it at 12lbs and under. I really tried to lighten it up. I've added the t.o.c. mods. plus I 'am modifying the canopy. so I don't have to fight with that little hatch. If anyone has any suggestions on this kit please post. Thanks, Buddy |

RE: 26% Carden Extra
Looks nice- seeing this being built brings back some good memories of the 30% version.
I have one suggestion. Dennis designed the 30% so that the canopy was permanently mounted and fuse access was only from the hatch in front of the canopy. I assume the 26% is the same. If you still can I would suggest modifying the canopy/hatch area so that it can all come off. It is a real PITA otherwise- you won't have much room to negotiate in the fuse especially once the tank is in. Cardens current designs all allow for the canopy area to be removed with the hatch. Looking forward to seeing the rest of the pictures as you progress. Dave |
RE: 26% Carden Extra
Willie, Is this an older kit ? When was this available thru Carden? I've read a couple things already that will help me on the 30% Extra kit I have. The canopy and hatch, make it a one-piece design, that's a great idea! And the TOC mods. |
RE: 26% Carden Extra
Hello,
The plans have 1995 on them. I don't know when they stopped producing the kit. I know you can still get spare parts for them. I talked to Dennis last year at Toledo about this kit and he sent me a disc with construction photo's that's really helped. On the elevators I also added counter-balancers. Buddy |
RE: 26% Carden Extra
thanks Buddy, that's a good suggestion too, call Dennis. He's been more then helpfull with other questions I've had. |

Hello,
The quality of the kit was excellent. The build was a little difficult. The plans are cluttered with info so I had to take my time to figure it out. I like the way Carden does there plans now very easy to read. It does take a little while to build if your going to lighten it and add the 3d mods which I recommend. There is one in the Carden gallery that was 15 lbs. I covered mine in monokote. If you have chance to get a kit I would recommend it. Buddy |

RE: 26% Carden Extra
I wish I could still get my hands on a 26% Carden Extra. It is still one of the best flying planes of this size I have ever flown. I have built 2 of them. Both were powered with a brison 2.4. (very similar to the FPE 2.4) I used MenzS 20x8 prop. The second one I built, I replaced most of the sheeting with 1/16" contest grade balsa instead of the supplied 3/32". I did not sheet the bottom of the hatch and turtle deck. I also hot wired out the turtle deck hollow. Both were built with the toc mods. You will love this plane.

I did 2-30%er's with the old clam shell design. These are great flying planes. They were a little more labor intense but built out to be beautiful planes as yours definately is. I also like your color scheme alot. Very nice..Walt

RE: 26% Carden Extra
I have an opportunity to get my hands on a NIB kit of the 26% Extra 300S.
What are the TOC mods? Where can I find these TOC mods? Link? Special instructions? Thanks. |
RE: 26% Carden Extra
The only TOC designation I have heard of through Carden Aircraft was the second generation of Caps. During this time the 40% Cap had the stab lowered about 1 inch and the rear turtle deck followed from the rear front hatch to the tail other than the original scale step down outline. The later generation 35% Caps were modified to the TOC version of the 40% er with a stab tube which eliminated the one piece stab. The version I mention in 40% was flown by Mike McConville at the TOC. In the 35% version it was also redesigned to remove the clam shell wing inlets with produced a lighter plane and easier build. Maybe some of these mods Dennis did refered to with other planes of his design but the Cap is the only one of my knowledge that had TOC mods....If there is a question about this call Dennis and he'll surely dial this question in...

RE: 26% Carden Extra
There is a supplement page with the instructions (1994 TOC Tail Mods) for the Extra 300s. All your doing is moving the elevator hinge line forward and increasing the elevator leading edge thickness for increased throws and larger elevators. On the rudder your adding wood to increasing the length of the rudder and double beveling the surfaces.
