Back in the late 90's I took some time away from R/C aircraft hobby and tried restoring my current Mustang a 1973 Coupe : From replacing the floor boards to the head liner,(that took a couple trys..) from the fenders to the rear tail light panel, from the engine which my brother rebuilt for me. Then there was the brakes and suspension the project was an investment in time more so than money. Like most subjects here at RC Universe, it was a labor of love. Here are some pictures and No! I don't drive it in the rain or snow but sure did when I was a young buck having purcashed my first one a '69' and then a 72 with the 351 Clevland and now my 2nd 73. How does ZZ Top put it ahhh yes "And I havn't even sadled my pony yet-"[8D]

Great car!

I sure do miss mine. I bought this 1971 Mach 1 Mustang for $1300 in 1979. It had 66k miles, 351C 4V engine, Ram-Air, Auto Trans, power steering, A/C and the handling package. It was my only car for 17 years.

I like it because it's such an unusual engine and can make a lot of power even at only 1.3L. Also, the chassis that the engine is in allows for some of the best handling of any car ever made.

It's not always easy nor cheap though, but the satisfaction comes for me when I outrun the 5.0L - 5.7L cars

It usually runs 12.2 to 12.3 at over 117 mph. I have done some very high 11's at over 116 mph.

I suck as a driver and I don't punish my car. In the hands of a lesser caring person, it probably would run mid 11's.

Suck it up V8 boy! There are many 1.3L turbo rotary cars that have over 400 rwhp

With ME driving, 0-60 takes just 3.4 seconds.

45-105 takes just 5.5 seconds, and I don't have to change out of third gear.

There ARE V8 alternatives [X(]

I wish I had my Mustang back, but I would likely usually drive the Mazda. The Mazda is more comfortable, quieter, safer, gets better gas mileage, handles better and is much more powerful than the Mustang was with it's cam, headers, intake, etc. The Mustang was a high 12 second car.

My Rotary has no pistons, rods, cam nor valves.

I had the Mustang up to 140+ mph with it's 3.5 rear gear. The Mazda has a 4.10 rear gear and I've had it up to 186 mph. The Mazda's redline is set at 9700 rpm. If I forget to turn off the a/c, the computer does it for me at 5300 rpm. The Mazda's factory computer is on a shelf. It now has the Haltech engine management system. I tune with a notebook computer from inside the car. It also has a wideband Oxygen sensor so that I can tune, in real time, for max power.

It's just different having a small, high winding turbo engine vs a big n/a V8. I like them both, for different reasons and will have a big V8 again in the future.

My friend has the same car as I do, except that he has a LS1 in it. I outrun him every time (He hasn't modified his 345 bhp engine).

His is though, eaiser to drive as he has much more low end torque than I. If I could have only his or mine, I would choose his, but only for around-town driving. If to win a race..., mine, mine, mine! The 1.3L screamer!!!!!!!!!!

Have you have driven a new Mustang lately and then there are the mods all computer designed and or assisted - As to handling: all types of packages are available for past and present Ford Mustangs then there appears after market versions such as Saleen- And then there is the un mistakable sound of the current production >V-8< with those really nice and obnoxious Flow Masters dependent on the type you install.Obviously you love your rotary but Mustangs are still in a class by themselves and talk all the "rotary" that you wish I guarantee Ford Mustang(s)can take any thing you dish..[8D]

Is there a Mustang that gets into the 11's, or even the low 12's with an average driver like me?

Yes, my car is not stock. I had to spend the time and money to take it from 182 bhp to ~450.

How quick and fast is your Mustang? My best qtr mile time is 11.86. My fastest qtr mile time is 117+. It's not a drag car though. It's a "sports car". Over 180 mph top speed and it idles, drives and sounds like stock.

Again, mine is my everyday driver and passes all inspections and is easy to drive, quiet and gets over 25 mpg on the highway with the a/c running.

You'll take anything I dish? Put up the numbers, you dish-topped, shot-peened, hardened, balanced, reciprocating V8 lover!

All in fun for me. I hope for you too

The quickest car that I've outrun was an 11.2 second Mustang. He had some 347 ci engine and N2O. I can't beat him from a stop as I don't get off the line very well and do suck as a drag racer. I beat him when we raced from about 30 mph to 130 mph. I had him by two feet. We went again from about 50 mph to 170. Well, I went 170 . I didn't see much of him after about 140.

I'm used to the V8 people talking trash and I do the same. We have a great time at it. Three people that I know have V8 powered RX-7's. Two of them are easily able to outrun me, but neither have a/c and they have very radical engines. They can't go much over 150 mph either due to the tight gearing in the non-independent non-Mazda rear ends. One of them is installing a Corvette rear though and I'll have much greater respect for the car once that is done.

Well I just 'carefully' washed and then started my stock restored Mustang that previously won "Mustang Monthly"magazine's'Readers' Album , in the January 2000 issue thanks in no small partto then editor Jeff Ford (now editor of Mustangs and Fords) who himself at the time was doing a 'stock restoration' of a 1972 Mustang MachI and I mean right down to "detailing the drive shaft.". I found out when the UPS man delivered me a catalog size parcel;which upon opening there was a 50-gift certificate from National Parts Depot .When the Jan.2000 magazine arrived there on 'the back page' said: DA WINNA (the transcript read),This month the prize (a$50 gift certificate from National Parts Depot)goes to Richard McFarland of Waldorf,Maryland. The composition is nice as is the photography. The car is very well done. Congrats, Richard[8D]

It sounds like you have spent a lot of money and time on your car and now have a great car! Photos? Race/dyno results?

I recently bought the Aquamist Water Injection System to install in my RX-7. That will allow me to run race gas boost levels without the race gas. The engine management system will control it. The water will come on at 12 psi and act to slow the propagation of the flame much as high octane race gas would.

That all means that I'll now be able to turn the boost up to about 23 psi and make about 550 bhp. There will be no change in the way the car starts, idles, sounds or drives.

Ok B-24 I'm sure your RX is quick and has out run some stock V-8 cars. But I have to call a bulls**t on a few of your facts.
0-60 in 3.4 seconds. Only if you push it off a cliff. How are you timing it? Top speed 180+ no way. It takes more power than you've got to push that thing 180mph. Again how are you timing it. Maybe I should keep quiet but I have been around street machines for 30 years. Everybody says their car will run 12s or has a high top speed. It just ain't so.

The 0-60 question: The engine management system(EMS) reads speed from the cruise control computer and of course the EMS has a clock in it. Also, 0-60 time can be calculated if you know your 1/8th mile time and speed. Both show me with 3.2 - 3.6 second 0-60 times.

The top speed question: Drag coefficient of .30. The car would do 145 with it's factory 182 bhp. With 435, it has been over 180. I can't prove that to you right now, but in the future, I will be able to show you a datalog from the EMS. Although I'm in the process of switching from the factory 4.10 rear gear to a 4.375, I will also be adding about 100 bhp so I should be able to maintain my top speed.

My friend already has almost 600 bhp in his '88 RX-7. He does 0-60 in about 2.5 seconds. Both of us use drag radials, no slicks or MT type tires. Ours are sportscars, not drag racers. Many cars that I could never beat from a stop, can't keep up from 25-150 mph.

For old, outdated info about my car, please see my web site at: http://brfoundation.com/RX-7/

Yea, I get this doubt all of the time. I'm used to it. It doesn't anger me.

I'm not picking on you, I promise. I just don't think your getting acurate info from your computer. Show us a slip from a dragstrip that says your 0-60 was under 4 seconds. Even making 450hp that car with all the interior in it and a stock rear end with slicks isn't going to do 0-60 in less than 4 seconds. The rotarys do make a ton of power set up correctly, but not much torque. Even with a 4.10 rear end it has to bog of the line if it's hooked. I helped my friend build a '78 280Z with a SB400 & turbo 350 with a mild 2,000 rpm stall. It weighs about 800-1,000 pounds less than your car and runs a best of 12.40s on a 9" M/T street slick.(no nitrous) With a looser converter it could get in the 11s. It would suck the head lights out of you RX. When your next trip up North?

LOL David
