Engine tools
Just ruined my spur gears as I ran my ATX with loose clutch bell and engine mounts - oops. I've 2 questions:
1) I intend to locktight the clutch bell screw, engine mounts and the cylinder head - is that alright? 2) I'm having trouble with the hex screws for the engine mount under the exhaust manifold. There's not quite enough room to get the small end of the allen key into it so I'm slowly stripping the head. Are there small shafted allen keys available (if so then where)? |
RE: Engine tools
1) yea threadlock the mount screws and the c/b screw, not sure about the engine head screws - i never bothered as mine have never come loose. be careful with the threadlock, u dont need much, i made that mistake before...
2) ur gonna have to take the manifold off to get to them properly. its worth getting a stainless steel screw kit for it, check out ebay for those. i use a ton of threadlock on these screws purely cos they are a pain to get to. watch out tho, the alloy mount is quite soft and the threads strip fairly easily. dont forget to get a new manifold gasket or 3... one more thing - the screws that go thru the chassis and into the engine mounting plate should be replaced with longer ones so u can get a nut onto them. i also recommend that for the screw thru the lower part of the engine mount and for the manifold screws. yea its a pain to do, but if u do all that with the right gearmesh, then u wont have any spur probs for a long time (subject to stones etc) hope that helps |
RE: Engine tools
Poor Judgement really did a good job of explaining this one, and his steps should be followed to a T. With regards to tools I would recommend picking up one of the allen sets either by MIP or By Factory Team Associated. They both have sets of allens with hardened tips that fit tightly into the screw heads. They are also long shafted thus providing a better reach. I would also make sure to purchase a good, solid phillips head screwdriver as there are plenty of phillips screws on the truck.

RE: Engine tools
I got a set of hex wrenches by Dynamite, and have found them really good. Also have a set of stainless screws from RC Screwz and have found them excellent as they are much harder than stock and are all hex head.
