MT2 Questions
 

Hi,

Iam new to cars (have been flying for about 6 years), and have decided that the MT2 looks like good fun, however, I have a few questions before I spend any hard earned !:D

1. I will be relocating to johannesburg shortly, (6000 ft above sea level) and because of this I am slightly concerned over power loss. I know from experience with my I.C planes that there can be up to a 20% power loss form the altitude (less oxygen in the air). I was wondering if any of you guys are running a MT2 at altitude, and if so what sort of power loss (if any) you are experiencing.

2. How durable are these cars, this will be my first car, so obviously I am going to need spare. Because of the relocation, parts may be a problem and I am therefore going to buy a whole selction of spares before I leave. What are the most common things to break from wear and tear and what am I likely to break during my first crashes?

First and foremost, get a failsafe. Don't worry about the really fancy ones, just pick up a duratrax or ofna failsafe. Then, buy two packs of diff cups. They are pretty cheap and this will be a full set. Do the 'diff cup mod' to this new set and swap them out after your breakin. Definitely before you open her up very much anywhere but on pavement. Then mod the originals so you have a set of backups. This is the achiles heal of the CEN MT2 and if you leave yours un-modded, you will go through plenty. Maybe even multiple breakages per tank of gas. Once modded, I have not broken a single one and that includes lots of small jumping. Nothing over about 4 feet of air. The next thing I would buy is a steering servo. Something like the Hitec 645MG with metal gears. The stock one will strip out really quick. Mile lasted a couple weeks and only 1 cartwheel. Next time I started it the servo went out and I smacked a mailbox. These are the only things I really broke that I didn't feel was my fault.

Things I would add, but are not absolutely necessary include: Roll bar - New Era makes a really good one. Upgraded metal brake disk, metal brake plug and metal brake seat.

Other than that, see Dr Honda about a set of ARO shock towers. Much stronger than stock and very adjustable. They even have a special mounting hole for 1/8 front buggy shocks. He posts in threads here on CEN Racing and makes the towers himself.

Good luck on your purchase. I have had my MT2 for 7 months or so and it has been a blast.

This is really easy and you will be able to get the metric fittings that fit the best.

Thanks for all the info, that mod looks like a must do. How about the clutch, do the wear out often?

I have not had a problem with it. I am still using the stock clutch and the original spur gear (watch me strip it the next time I run it now that I said that). If I put a bigger engine in it I think I will change the clutch then. I may even pull it out just to see how it is doing.

Get some spare spurs as well, and have you thought about getting the Magnum over the MT2, it has a few good upgrades.

No, I havnt really considered the magnum but I guess I will have to looki into it. What are the major dufferences between the mangnum anf MT2 except for the engine they look very similar to me.

I will probably get some clutches and spur gears aswell (even though your clutch is still fine, Alvinl)- I dont wont to be stuck without a clutch!:)

the magnum has a single piece chassis and thats about it really for the differences iirc, besides the .18. i doubt u will find one in the UK in the near future tho, besides - a 2 piece chassis (as on the funfactor) allows u to swap the front skid plate, and due to the shape of the 2 piece, its probably stiffer than the magnums... but dont quote me on that, im presuming both are the same material...? if u want an .18 in it, get the OS18CVR-X - thought id get that in before anyone else!

Oh - B&Q plumbing section for the 10mm compression fittings for the diff cup mod - only a couple of quid to do the whole truck - scuff the cups with emery cloth and super glue the fittings on, works for me.

O.K cool. Dont think I will be getting the Magnum, it just dosnt look worth it for the extra money! I will probably buy the O.S engine to take at a later date and install once the CEN engine is knackerd.

Magnum also has a new top chassis plate that eliminates the flex in the chassis (something that we all try and mod in someway!) it also lays down the steering servo onto the chassis and gives you a 125cc fuel tank (also a popular mod...bigger tank). And a way better body (IMHO). And the chassis/shock towers are better blue insted of purple.
So in other words its done a few things that you will do to your truck anyway, but I guess it depends on how much the price diff was. I was doing my comparisons on EBAY where the Magnum ranges from $250 - $340 and the MT2 $230 - $330.

Hi.
We recommend getting the Magnum NX truck over the MT2. It has a better radio system, bigger engine and many of the parts issues have been revised with this truck. It is one of our best sellers here at CEN Racing for 2006!

If you do go with the MT2 you will need to modify the diff cups or run the newer diff cups that come on the Magnum and Talon (part number FF232).

CEN did you get rid of the weak diff cups and just replace them with the stronger magnum diff cups?
