Plans from the very last part of the .60 2-stroke period
I´ve always loved the planes from the last part of the .60 2-stroke period in the beginning of the 90s. Planes like Hanno´s Mystic 60 he used to win the worlds in -93, the Jekyll 60, Ola Fremming´s Spigas designs, etc. I´m wondering if there are any plans still around today for that kind of planes? I love both the looks and the size of those designs. The only one I´ve seen so far that´s still available is the Desire 60 and the Loaded Dice but I´m sure there are many more as this was back when there was still a whole lot of wooden designs flown. I´m sure there are many local designs that has been distriuted in the form of simple hand drawn plans and such. Everything, including such simple plans is of the utmost interest.
I think many agrees with me that this period in pattern produced some beautiful looking designs. I´ve never quite liked the really ballistic missiles from the pre-turnaround years but many designs from the last part of the 80s and the beginning of the 90s are just beautiful and that it would be a pity if they would be lost forever due to lack of interest and plans being thrown away, etc, if they were not widely spread designs (I´ve seen that happen way too many times).

I will ask him, actually he might even chime in here if we are lucky. I have noticed that he visits this forum quite frequently. I don´t know though if the later 60-size Spigas planes were wooden designs or if they used composite fuselages, but I´ll ask. I just thought I´d start a thread to get some more info on as many designs as possible.

Check the Singapore Hobbies website and look at the MK kits- I think you can still get some of the
later 60 2 cycle pattern kits as well as newer stuff like the Topstar series.

None? There must be dozens of designs from around 1985 or so until maybe 1993?

Hey Erik,
What about a Conquest 4? We had one that was modernised using an OS 90 4 stroke and fixed gear. I've still got the plan... but like most of the designs from that period? it has a fiberglass fuselage.

Here is a photo of my Atlanta which I built and campaigned sucessfully in the mid to late eighties. It was a good flying model in those times using the YS60FR short stroke.
I cant imagine why anyone would want to return back to these times. Nothing fly's better than the current state of the art 2x2 models with the modern power plants we currently have.

I don´t plan on using it as my competition plane. Just as a nice sport plane for nostalgic reasons.

Look at the link below for details of the Loaded Dice. This link is to information on the Loaded Dice III but the earlier ones should still be available from them too. Any of them would make for a lovely flying plan built model if that is what you want. (The version IIS was my first "proper" pattern model!

The newer style might fly better, but I think I like the looks of that Atlanta more than any of them
Do none of the 2 meter planes have retracts? (maybe that isn't allowed?)

The Boxer 60 and 120 are built from plans. I believe the plans are still for sale...somewhere. Rick Allison sells them--he used to advertise them here on RCU.
There is a Boxer 60 listed over in the For Sale area.

I got an Eclipse (R/C City) in a trade and love to sleek design. It is in "kit" form with plans foam cores and a fiberglass fuse but I might make and exception to my no building lifestyle for this one. Fixed gear conversion and a YS 91FZ would be just too cool..........And from her looks you know she can fly!!!

Hi there
Drawings for the last 60-size Spigas is available as DXF-files. They are not full building drawings, but for someone with a bit of experience they should be sufficient. I still have this model, I bought it back from the third owner a couple of years ago. It's as was then with an OS .61 Hanno, bolly pipe, reatracts etc. I pull it out one a year or so and plays with it for a day. Actualy it's flies really well.

God dag fra California! Hvor langt er Horten fra Oslo?
Spigas 60 plans available for download?
I have a plan (hardcopy) of Steve Helm's Checkmate and is willing to trade for a Spigas 60 plan. The Checkmate is similar and about the same size as Wolfgang Matt's Joker.

I have a Saphir II plan (1.88 ws) which is very nice. It's the original plan drawn by Günter Matt (not THE plan but a copy, duh).
I also have an OK model Mystic 30 plan, not designed for scratchbuilding but it shows the outline nicely.
I'll make a copy and trade if anyone's interested

Jon,
The Mystic was a beautiful plane. I wonder if the larger EZ versions (Mystic 90 and Mystic 120) came with the same kind of simple plans?
When it comes to slightly older the planes I have the plans for Wolfgang Matt´s Diamant, although it´s a 2m design.

RE: Plans from the very last part of the .60 2-stroke period
Hei Erik!
The Saphir II is for 1.20 four strokes but it's a great quality plan with full-size templates for all formers etc. It uses simple foam and wood construction.
The Mystic from EZ probably never came with plans. This OK model plan that I have is 130cm wingspan and it's from the wood kit that was produced just before the factory burned down in the 90's. It's possible to enlarge it and scratchbuild but it probably requires a lot of experience to do it. The Mystic is one of the most beautiful planes I've seen.
I can copy and send you both the Saphir II and Mystic, I'd love to have the Diamant plan aso perhaps we can do a trade?

RE: Plans from the very last part of the .60 2-stroke period
Enlarging it is an option if they didn´t change to geometry of the plane when the scaled it down. I have a few articles from the worlds in 1991 and 1993 and I think that one of them had the plane sizes and tip/root chord of the top 10 planes listed. So it would be easy to compare.
I´ll contact you about the plans.

RE: Plans from the very last part of the .60 2-stroke period
The dimensions are probably very accurate but the stab is flat and the main wing airfoil is too thick to scale up so you need to do something about the wing saddle, airfoil and stab profile.
Apart from that it's a good plan with most formers drawn in full size.
Look forward to hearing from you about a trade.

RE: Plans from the very last part of the .60 2-stroke period
Jon,
I did some calculating and it seems the Mystic 30 is the Mystic 120 scaled down to 70% size and that the Mystic 90 is an 85% version. If so the root/tip chord of the 30 version should be something like 287 / 175 mm.
I´ll send you an email now.

Hi again
Horten is 80-90 km south of Oslo, on the western side of the fjord.
I will make the Spigas drawings available for free download on may pages (home.online.no\¨ofremmi), not sure when as this is not my top priority. If the weather continues to be like today (rain, no flying possible) it may be within the weekend.
