The ones used in my Kwik Fli III taper wing were 32 years old. I bought them new in 1974 and installed them in the aircraft but they were never used. When I got the aircraft back they worked like brand-new and still do.

I love Rhom-Air landing gear. I never had a problem with them. They worked as advertised each and every time.

My friend and pattern mentor, Syd Clement, gave me an in-depth training session on the proper operation of these gear many years ago. I attribute his instruction as to why/how my gear worked so reliably.

Naturally, no one uses Freon for propellant and A/C oil for lubrication these days. I was taught to use 100 lbs. of compressed air and to lubricant the system's o-rings with silicon grease stick as was sold in Sears back in the very early Eighties.

I'm looking for a couple sets now, so if anyone has Rhom Air gear they want to sell or trade for, PM me.

I have a set of rom air retracts --they are in a spitfire that has never been flowen..flyed???the hoses are shot but it worked when put away. I just got it down from rafters with the idea that I would sell it --someone could fly it --and if the unthinkable happened have a set of retracts--wheels are locked down--strange-- I was going to photo it and put it on RC GROUP.COM--ran search engine to see if ROM_AIR is in bussines and found thread..

Phantom II

I have a set of Rhom-Air retracts on my 7 foot Phantom. The recently developed a slight leak and the nose wheel does not want to retract. Does anyone have any idea of how to replace the "0" rings. It appears as though the top of the cylinder screws off but I have not taken them off the aircraft to check it. The mains retract, but after isolating the nose gear, I still have a very slow leak and I would guess that I need to replace all of the "o" rings. I did read on an earlier post that you should not cut the hose seeing as how it might score the nipple and cause further leaks. This is the kind of thing that I am looking for. Any other advice would be greatly appreciated. I did find the troubleshooting guide on Rhobart's which is great, but I need either a manual on the Rhom-Air's or some tips on disassembly of the gear cyinder.

One picture may be all you need. A special tool may exist to do this but I used this method many times.

I have found that they leak where the piston shaft goes through the end block on its way to the trunion. How does one replace that seal?

I have a set of Rom-airs in my new completed Utter Chaos. The control valve needs new 0rings but is Rom out of business? It seem the retracts have slight leaks in air as they would only be good for one flight before needing re-filling. I can't seem to google Rom-air but if anyone knows how to reach them would appreciate it.

ROHMs are great but the control valve is not, check all connections for leaks. Replace the control valve with a ROBART control valve and you may want to replace the tank with ROBART also. If you have not switched to compressed air do so. After dissembling and cleaning my ROHMs after not being used for thirty years and new tank and valve the system holds 100 psig for 24 hours. Use a silicone grease on cylinders and o-rings when switching to air. A bike pump or small 12 VDC pump can be used. My 32 years old Phoenix 7 has this setup. Oh yea, check the fill valve if leaking replace with ROBART fill valve. I'm not pushing ROBART just all I have experience with. I'm sure others will work. I dont think ROHM is in business now . HTH

Thanks Ron, I probaboy should have taken the cylinders apart for cleaning and possible greasing, but I didn't before installing them. I used a Robart control valve and the small air Rom tank. There is not a lot of room in a Chaos so put tank aft of wind TE. The Rom control valve is much smaller then the Robart but the Orings appeared to be to old so I used a Robart and the Robart fill valve along with new Robart tubs. Really the only part of the system that is Rom is the actual gears. Never the less seems like they leak off pretty fast although I can probably get at least one flight with out belly pancaking.

Pump them up and leak test with Windex, should see bubbles. Check the new parts also.

A couple of years ago your responded to a request for information on Rhom-Air retracts. You indicated that you had the instruction manual. I have an old set that haven't been used for many years, and in the process of setting them up, I find that the nose gear cyliinger is leaking around the ram in the down position. I assume the O-rings need replacing. My question is how do the cylinders come appart? It appears that one or both ends are sealed with some type of epoxy material. Any suggestions? Thanks

Back in 2006 8178 said he had a manuel that was 16 pages. Just wonder if there is any way we could talk him into coping it to the net so we could down load and print it out?

Thanks FB for providing a copy of the Rhom manual, I really appreciate it and answers my question. I have been using air tool oil in my nitro engines as an after run oil with good results and wondered if anyone has tried it in the Rhom retracts. If not, what would be a good oil to use.
