.10 to .15 Kaos/Dirty Birdy anyone?
I think I remember seeing some small aircraft of the old classic pattern ships in this forum. I just bought some .10 and .15 engines, a favorite size, among many, of mine and am looking for something to build. If anyone has plans in a digital file of a model of this size and type, I would appreciate receiving a copy, or discussing this type of project in general. TIA

Although I can't help you with the plans themselves, wasn't the size you are talking about offered in a kit by Global Hobbies aka Hobby People a few years ago? It was a Dirty Birdy...?

They offered a kit called the Birdy Ten. I had it for a while and then sold it unbuilt. It utilized a semi-symmetrical airfoil and the kit quality was really poor. I wouldn't mind having another one at this point, however. <G>

Ed, I built a DB for a Norvel .074. I scaled the plans to 37.5" span. It weighs 23ozs and really moves. But, it will tip stall if flown too slow. At speed it's a lot more solid than you would expect from a small plane like this.
I can scale the DB plans to 39" or 40" which, I think, would be perfect for a .15. (BTW, the Norvel .074 is every bit as strong as an OS LA .10 and weights less. Too bad they aren't being made anymore.)

I built a Baby Birdie many years ago, the 1/2a version of the Birdy Ten. It was touted as a 1/2a pattern plane. It looked great but it was a little large for a TD and the airfoil really stunk!
Their "semi-symmetrical" airfoil with built in washout was designed to build flat on the board. The airfoil transitioned from the wing root to the tip to provide the washout. At the root the ribs were flat from the spar to the trailing edge. At the tip they were flat bottomed or very nearly. The plane required almost full down elevator for inverted flight. Not optimal for pattern style flight!
The moments on the plane were very nice and I think with a symmetrical wing it would have been a good plane.

The plan is still available from Bill Northrup, the former editor of MB--he advertises in Flying Models. I can get you the name of the model if you're interested.

Your Dirty Birdy is the plane I was thinking of, Dave. Wow, nice work.
My problem is that I keep forgetting I'm getting slower and slower in my hand-eye coordination. Something like that may well be out of my control by now. But I would sure like to give it a whirl.
I've always had more patience building smaller models than larger models. I admit that I'm antsy and have trouble sitting still for more than a few minutes. Small models let me get a lot done, percentage wise, in a small enough time segment to keep me interested in completing a project.
These days most of my models are ARFs, but the small models I can build with a reasonable chance of actually finishing them. No more hours and hours of wet sanding a pattern ship for this guy. <G>

My PP15, had it had landing gear, would have been very competitive in Novice/Sportsman pattern. I like to fly in close and I usually asked the judges if it was okay to do so. None have ever refused to let me bring it in close where it could be easily seen by all. In that environment, the PP15 would have kicked booty in the lower classes.

You might consider the Tsunami. Pictured is one I did for a Norvel .074. This was originally a .40 sized plane and I scaled it down to 38". Scaled up from that a bit, I'm sure it would be a gangbuster .15 plane. My small version has zero bad habits including tip stall. The engine is set to zero on both thrust lines, and there's NO trim change from full throttle to idle. It really is an amazing design.
With the .074 honking, knife edges, either side, are a breeze with just a hint of elevator correction. Same with inverted.
I've even managed a sloppy, knife edge loop. [X(]

And using FlyQuiet tubing, I get a rediculously large volume muffelr with the exhaust exiting from near behind the wing. Just a mist of oil on the underside of the elevator is the result.
Three baffles within the tubing produces no loss of power with the dominant noise being that produced by the prop.

Wait till I do a test run though, to see if the mods on the .10 do much. Then, it would be neat if you could post your results on the same thread.
If the Tsunami is for the .15, I'm speculating that 38" span may be a bit undersized. I can blow them down to any size, though. Keep in mind, you have to carve the canopy out of balsa. The original kit gave you the usual see thru stuff but I've never been able to master the art of molding clear canopies.

Thanks Andy. The first couple of mods look easy enough. It looks like the FP is a little lower in power than the old FSR right from the start, based on the 8x4 rpm figure. Any idea how much of a boost the crank mods give?
Even though they do not have a great power/weight ratio, those little engines are so quiet and user-friendly that they are really a lot of fun to use. Even stock, with an 8x3 prop you get enough thrust that a really light plane can be a very good performer.
I worry for the future because very few people in our club fly with anything less than a .46. It's nice to see that these kinds of engines nevertheless aren't disappearing yet. There's even some development going on--TT's new .18 and .28 are amazingly light and should be very strong for their weight.

I have always been a small model enthusiast, but with limited participation in that area because of my interest in pattern and competition fun flying. But every now and then I'd sneak in something with a .15 up front.
Peppermint Pattie is my favorite small model.
Lately I have been collecting my favorite .15 of all time, the HB .15. Yes, it is a baffle piston equipped engine, but it doesn't let that stop it from being a real screamer with an old Top Flite nylon 7x4. It easily out turns my Super Tigre G20/15 on the same prop. I love both engines, but can't imagine running something as large as an 8x4 on the nose. The HB .15 on the nose of my PP was a rip roaring combination. I have just acquired a NIB PP kit. You know which engine is going up front. <G>

FB, I simply scaled the original sixty plans down to 37 1/2" span. I made very few changes when I built it, but surprisingly enough it still balanced according to the plans. I have since installed an FP .10. PM me your email address.
