I went with more modern covering on mine . That silk and dope sticks well , took me 5 hours to strip the wing .
Still waiting on a canopy that I ordered , the one on it now is a balsa one I made as original was lost . Mine came in at similar weight with battery etc its 3.1kg
I was going to go the same colour scheme as yours but I took a vote and black and white won , Black and white was also the easier of the 2 , the scheme you chose would have been hard to do with covering film but I was prepared to give it a go
The only major difference is I modified the wing to bolt on as I did not know the original method used

Yes the Taurus is a great flying plane . I built one back in 1970 from a kit and remember i had an OS max 60 gold head engine in it. This one i built from plans i built it as lite as i can and i have a LA 46 turning a 12-6 prop and it flies great.i do have lots of pics on the build of the Taurus. By the way i used monokote to cover and trim it this alone saved on weight.

I just got off the phone this afternoon with Dennis Hunt, and he confirmed the S. Africa trip was in April of 1962. It was a three week trip throughout Africa that Dennis had been working to arrange with Top Flite since 1960.
Apparently in the beginning, there was no guarantee that Ed would be able to ship his planes there, so Ed worked directly WITH Dennis as the Taurus was being designed and built so Dennis would have an exact duplicate there waiting for him when he arrived. He sent Dennis drawings, (most of them very crude on brown paper), and told Dennis what to do to build his properly. The picture on post #298 shows Dennis posing with his own exact Taurus duplicate. The specs of the crate, and arrangements for transporting it were handled by Dennis.
I hope you folks are sitting down. Dennis recalls the two Taurus models that traveled to S. Africa as being IDENTICAL if his memory serves correctly.[X(][X(] I don't know if other evidence presented in this thread may serve to refresh his memory; it would be interesting to get further commentary after he reads the whole thread.
If the two planes were identical, it means the second Taurus fuselage on the right side of the crate with the military pilot and more streamlined fuselage was built at a later time, most likely after the 1962 Nats, and before the 1963 World Championships. Pictures dated August 1963 (Carrier photos), clearly show the Taurus 2 with wing #3. As has been proposed by Cees, an earlier wing was modified to produce the "carrier wing", and maybe the striped wing, (alternate wing paint scheme). Both Taurus versions were most likely present in Belgium...one with reeds and one with proportional. It has been discussed previously that Ed chose to fly his "reed" Taurus, (now the VR/CS Taurus), because of the windy conditions in Belgium.
Dennis states that Ed was always making changes and learning from experience. My own best guess is that the striped wing, (alternate paint scheme wing) was built/modified last, as it shows up in later photos, and has more modern hinged control surfaces. Ed kept these two Taurus versions after he left R/C since they were the most important to him, and held the most memories. The Taurus 2 probably became his primary plane after the 1963 "worlds". I don't see any evidence of pictures after 1963 in Belgium of the original VR/CS Taurus. I think it was "retired" after the World Championships.
I know there is still a lot of speculation, but please go "easy on me" everybody.
Hopefiully Dennis will catch up on the thread, and respond himself at a later time.

Well some time ago I did find this note from Dennis Hunt,
The Taurus he has built before Ed cam to S. Africa was, as expected by me, constructed by using the plans made bij Ed Kazmirski and Frank Myers, as called by him; pre-Top-Flite-pencil-drawings.

Don't know where or how you found that note to Beppe, but it backs up what I said all along after talking with him. Dennis said they were crude drawings on brown paper--he never said they were formal plans like the Meyer's Plan.
If you look up the discussion earlier in this thread you will remember the Meyer Plan was dated December 6th 1961. The box also says the plane first flew Thanksgiving 1961, and the plan was drawn from the "finished model". The Kazmirski trip was early April 1962. Remember they didn't have all the wonders of modern technology we have now, so IMO, it is doubtful the Meyer Plan would have immediately been sent to Dennis in South Africa in time for him to build a plane from it in time for the tour. It may be humanly possible but unlikely. I believe Dennis when he says the drawings were crude and on brown paper--not a formal plan like the Meyer Plan. There was nothing "crude" about the Meyer Plan.
The Meyer Plan was used by many of Ed's friends to construct their own Taurus model for the 1962 season. Remember from the Jan 1963 Taurus ad, there was an impressive list listing several modelers winning with the Taurus at various contests in 1962. Hello George,
My project about the reconstruction of the earliest succesfull Taurus Ed Kazmirski build in spring 1961 and we later saw in the crate he take with im to Rhodesia was to show the world this model.
I never get positive responses from these people that cooperated in the thread about Ed Kazmirski's Taurus so I let it for what it was and didn't show further results of my research. All I documented and stored in my own archive.
The Taurus is finished and is a good pattern ship as we could expect from the designer Ed Kazmirski. Even the shorter tailcone of this earliest succesfull Taurus is a big pro for modern proportional pattern flying. Yes the commercial Top Flite Taurus later was shortened too to make the model better responding to proportional flying.
Ed enlarged the earliest Taurus 150 % to design the Simla so it was also a successful job for me to redesign the Simla too within the smallest discrepanties with modern computer technics. The Simla was proportional controlled too.(1965)
The 'Wester' Taurus, ( Wester is my backname) was called that way to wait for responses and what I wrote the jury is still out. see the first page of my thread, so still is the Wester Taurus.

This thread has been perking along for the past 7 years or so, (sometimes with long pauses), but it's nice to see that it is still the number one viewed thread on the Classic Pattern forum. A (very much) condensed version of this forum was the basis of my article KAZ in 2010 for Model Aviation.
What I particularly liked about this thread was that it contained just about every bit of solid documentation about Ed and his planes during his modeling career, (in addition to a lot of "stuff" that didn't really stand the test of time). A lot of that documentation was in the form of rare pictures. While reading something about the 1960 FIRST FAI CHAMPIONSHIP won by Ed Kazmirski, I came across a picture of Ed and the Orion I didn't remember seeing before. Please excuse the duplication if it was already placed in here somewhere, but it might be nice to see the picture again anyway.

Frankly, I didn't notice the lack of a canopy, or the wire antenna, yet I clearly see them now so that's most likely not Ed's plane. One thing I DID notice were the landing gear struts--I think Ed's would have been simple wire, but since I took this to be the 1960 Worlds, I figured Ed could have done whatever he wanted.
Unfortunately, I can't remember the exact site I was on at the time--I Googled the web site on the picture, but (in the time I had) couldn't find the picture again, I'll send the picture to a German friend I have--maybe he can shed some light on it.

I don't think the photo of the Orion was taken at the 1960 championships. There are gliders in the background and at the 1960 championships all the competitors had distinctive numbered clothing like this picture of Stegmaier from Germany.

Most likely, if memory serves, after the 1963 worlds, and taken at the Lichtenstein club. Bloke flicking the prop looks like Fritz Bosch. The model have been Matt snr's...

A little information: The picture came from Dieter from Germany. He has a great interest in vintage pattern planes. He told me he received the picture from Urs Leodolter, (Swiss champion pilot), as part of a collection. I am still inquiring who the people are. Here is what Dieter says in his first e-mail:
I got from Urs Leodolter the „StreilCollection“. About Mr.Streil: Mr. Streils was a Swiss business man and runs a Hobby Shop inSwitzerland. ...... Mr.Streil was a closelyfriend and fan of the Giezendanner`s and he followed them to many competitions.He was at this time an excellent photographer and took a lot of pictures. Urs got the complete collection from Mr.Streil`s heritage, (i.e.estate?), but the pictures were in miserable condition. The pictures were kept many years in a cellar and they are almost (stuck) together “together glued” and “rolled”.
