MK Wild Beat
I'm thinking about starting the MK Wild Beat kit i have. Not only is this a large plane (76" ws) but the kit is absolutely beautiful. Mk kits have to be seen to be believed. The shaping of most parts is already done. Everything is finish quality. Some glue here and there and I'm ready to start glassing. Are there any objections to a 4 cycle powered build thread?[sm=72_72.gif]

RE: MK Wild Beat
Sorry about the plans photo. The plans are too long for a conventional shot. I will need a longer table. The plane appears to have an adjustable stab similar to a Beetle. The quality and the amount of parts is amazing. Everything is numbered or lettered and packaged nicely. It is a shame that these kits aren't available for sale anymore commercially.

The kit includes a set of MK retracts but no nose gear.[&o] 4 cycle, tail dragger, maybe this build should be in the modern pattern forum. Although retractable mains would throw them for a loop over there.

Also since it was manufactured in Japan, it must be disposed of properly. Send it ove and I'll take care of you! You need not thank me, What are friends for...

Surely a MK pattern kit of any size would be tolerated here. no need to send it to unknown locations.[sm=teeth_smile.gif] headed to Kinko's, anybody want a copy of these plans? chuck/atlanta 60 could probably reproduce the fiberglass parts.

Dave,
I had no idea that these later kits were prepared so well. When the Beetle thread started I almost lost my...
MK has outdone themselves with these kits, didn't know it could be possible. I too am really looking forward to your build on this one.
One right after another.. Your becoming a building machine! And I'm getting really good ay scrolling through these posts! I think I'm going to look for a more comfortable chair for my desk.
Whice four stroker are you planning for the WB?
Not sure if it would be feasable, but OS just releasred a 91 two stroke that is the same dimensions as there 61. Would a pipe fit/look ok on the WB? I think the four stroke would be more fitting for the plane. She is going to fly so graceful, damn I cant wait to see you finish this.

Ah, the Wild Beat. A beautiful model by Mr Akiba. He really started the deep fuselage trend so prevalent today with his Calm series. A great designer.
Wish I had that kit or even the plan []

David, i am reviewing T Brooks' Beetle thread right now. the kits are remarkable similar. also this is a 1.20 4c size plane. in keeping with the forum's 2 stroke preference perhaps i will use an OS 1.60. a kit of this size with so much work already done should be worth hundreds of dollars. i know i would buy another one in a heartbeat after looking this one over.

RE: MK Wild Beat
I think I remember them going for $550 when they were available. Was that right?
Just staring at the pics you posted of the contents, they make for a huge buying factor.
If I do get a chance for one I really am going to be more agressive at getting one. The enjoyment of building a kit prepared at that caliber will last a life time, or spoil you for the rest to come.

i don't know what the original price was. i paid just over $500 for the WB and a MK Silent St. the Silent st is smaller, no retracts and it has an original price tag of $499.99 on it. i probably should trace the parts as i use them on this build.

RE: MK Wild Beat
Oops...I'm mixing up my Japanese names. The Calm I mentioned was by Mr Hatta not Mr Akiba. Anyway, both produced beautiful designs.
David. E- mail sent reference plans.
Here's a shot I took of Mr Akiba (center) at the 2001 World Champs, held here in Ireland, with his follow on to the Wild Beat & Beat On called the Grand Slam.

Hi David,
I'd like a copy of the plans for my files. While you're building, trace all the parts with dimensions - makes building a copy much easier!! (I'll take a copy of the parts sheet, too - if you get the time).
This is the right forum for your build thread: A) we all love to build; B) the design is pretty outdated for FAI level competition (but still a beautiful, great flying airplane). If you fly off a grass field, you might consider fixed gear, but it is not necessary unless the field is rough. The airplane will have a higher 'coolness' factor in the air with retracts!
Keep up the thread - lots of photos are GREATLY appreciated!
Regards,
Will Bartlett
PS PM me with the cost for the plans, shipping (rolled, in a tube), etc.

Will, we have grass and pavement at our field. the retracts are very long though. that would mean lots of gear ripping torque should a landing be rough. i might build that area with carbon fiber pieces.

David,
You will be amazed at how nicely an airplane like the WIld Beat will land - very slow and graceful. The retracts shouldn't be an issue, but the CF reinforcement is worth the effort and peace of mind!
=Will
PS I acquired a Grand Slam kit (now out of production) from Singapore Hobbies last year with a little arm twisting - it was from the Yong's personal kit stock! (not an MK kit, but equally as nice)

Hey Pete,
If the price is significantly less than $800 US I'd jump on it (that was the Indy R/C price about 10 years ago). It is a GREAT kit and I sincerely doubt there will ever be any like it again [].
Regards,
Will
PS What other kits are left at Singapore hobbies? Have they gotten any more MK kits or is MK out of the kit business?
enjoy your trip!!

Will, no they don't have any other MK kits, it changes every now and then. MK kits as you and everybody else know, the golden kits as I call them are no longer made. They are making a few ARF's can't recall any as being pattern. I'll check out the Wild Beat when I get there.
