Hi-- I wanted to show this plane that I just acquired from a fellow's estate. His brother said he used to fly in competition years ago. One of my flying buddies came over to look at it, and said he thought it was a Tiporare. It is equipped with an OS 61SF with a tuned pipe, Futaba servos, and mechanical retracts. I took the motor out, cleaned it all up, and test ran it on my engine stand, and it ran excellent. I replaced the older Futaba S148 servos with the newer Futaba 3010's, and the older retract servo's in the wing and fuse worked great. I replaced the old fuel tank and lines, installed a new receiver, and checked all the functions. Everything worked perfectly, so I took it to our field for a test flight. I asked one of our pattern flyers to flight test it.The plane accelerated smoothly down the runway, lifted off, and only needed a click of elevator adjustment, for perfect level flight. He then put it through every maneuver he could come up with, and the plane performed flawlessly. Well, another fellow came to watch, and he said the plane wasn't a Tipo, but it's sister the "Illusion". I did a little research on both planes, and finally saw the minute differences. I'm still extremely pleased with how it performs. Here are a few pics. Dean

You are correct, its a Tiporare i'm 99% sure but its been 24 years since I had mine. That was a common paint scheme of the time also. I miss that plane.

It's not a Tipo. It's an Illusion. I'm 100% sure

I think the sale thread also made this clear.

I agree with Doxila. Definitely an Illusion. The wing on a Tipo is at the bottom of the fuse and the Illusion has its wing lower mid. Also, the Tipo has an notable anhedral horizontal stab

And for those with keen eyes, you can tell the difference between the 750 squares wing of the illusion vs the 720 of the classic (original) Tipo. They are different at the root and the wider chord of the Illusion at the fuse side is noticeable. The stab is also wider.

Here are my two AeroComposites Tipo 750s from the early 80s. The Orange and White checkerboard one has an OS 61 FSR and an ED bent pipe. The Red, White, and Blue one has an OS 61RF-P ABC. Notice the gray EVA foam Dave Brown wheels on the RWB one - I got those from Dave himself at the 1982 Lincoln Nats. BTW - the kids in that picture are now 30 and 32! Man I'm getting old!!

I love the finish Dave Brown used to use on his pattern airplanes. I asked him a few times at the WRAM show what color he used for the gold/bronze color. He said it was a light/medium bronze color used by GM in either the late 60's or early 70's. (either Oldsmobile or Chevy truck). I have a new Illusion kit in the box, hopefully one day I will build it. Is his Phoenix at the AMA Museum in Muncie Indiana?

A guy in one of our RC clubs used to fly a Tiporare around 1990, but it was larger, probably a 6 foot or bigger wingspan. Definitely bigger than the Great Planes Tiporare - at least a 70 or more inch wingspan.

I am finishing a Great Planes Tiporare and I like to reproduce the Dave Brown paint scheme. Some one know the RAL code (or FS code) for the light/medium bronze color used in his Tiporare? Pictures show different tones and is not easy to find the right one. It is a mettalic color?.

After no one reply me, I made some research in Google and even not possible to find the GM light/medium bronze color, I found House of Color pearl paints PBC31 Sunset and PBC48 Cinnamon.

Do you think I am right? Not easy to compare colors.

Just finished painting this one after working on it for a while . Going to use a YS side exhaust 61 with a pipe for power . Set up as a taildragger . Should be a blast .
