Technician Kit wanted
 

Posting for a friend:


I'm looking for a Pattern Aircraft first introduced in the late 80's called the Technician. This aircraft was produced by L&L Hobbies
located in Cincinnati, Ohio. I would like to buy one kit or two (new kits) if any of your friends might still have one or know where I can purchase this kit. L&L's byline was "a Pattern Aircraft as good as you are...maybe better". 64" in wingspan.

A little info on the Technician. It was designed and produced by Carl Lovins (L&L) who also owned and operated Carl's Hobbies in Forrest Park, OH for a number of years. I believe Carl is still active in RC in the greater Cincy area and also competes some in vintage CL Stunt. I'm sure Carl would know who has the molds etc for it if he doesnt have them.

I have a Technician airplane. In fact if the photo's posted came from Flying models magazine, I have that very plane. It was built by Bob Hunt for me. I would like to get any info on the plane as I have no manual for it.

Bob was the editor for Flying models anda friend of mine. I own a car stereo shop. We did a trade. I put a good stereo in his car and he agreed to build a plane of my choice. I picked the Technician. He built it and did a review in his magazine before giving it to me. The paint scheme in the photo above is the same as my plane so my guess is that itcame from Flying Models Magazine. I still have it in pristine condition as it was beyond my flying skills at the time and has not been flown since the magazine article. I am now back in the hobby and will probably attempt to fly it this summer. I really am trying to get info as I do not have a manual and would like to check the CG before flight. Can anyone help?

did the FM article have a plan with it? Do you know what month and year the article was published?

The plan would likely specify the CG. The build manual might be trickier to come by and may not have much info related to balancing and so forth but I might be wrong.

You are correct. I used to have 3 or 4 copies of the article for obvious reasons but I can't seem to find them right now. But I will at some point. By the way when I went home last night I checked to see if the photos were the same as mine and the are so maybee if RJF knows where he got them that might help.

The Technician was designed by an old friend of mine, Carl Lovins from Cincinnati, OH. I believe Carl still flies and is a member of the GCRCC in Cincy.

The shots I posted were from a Dean Pappas R/C Pattern column in Flying Models and not a feature specifically about the Technician. I'm afraid I can't remember which issue it was. I don't believe a plan for the Technician was ever published.

Thanks for the reply. I remember Dean. Incredible flyer. I remember him doing rolling circles with my Jr tiger the first time he touched the controls. The Technician was on the front cover along with the story of the build on the inside. Somewhere I have the magazine. I will look for it this weekend. If I find it I will let you know.

That is amazing. Thank you very much. Any chance you have anything on a pepper .25 or a hammer .40 from around the same time? I have a pepper half built, I started it 25 years ago. I have the plans but would like to see the article on it. The hammer was Bob's plane at the field when I had the jr tiger. Thanks again for your help.

This is the Hammer 40 article from the May 1985 issue. I haven't included the plan as it is still commercially available so there may be copyright issues posting it on a public forum but I think we're OK with just the words and music.

I am impressed. Very impressed. Being new to the forum I don't have any background but I would bet you are known for this. I wish to thank you for all you have done. I will finish the pepper this summer and I will let you know when it is complete. Thanks again.

Thanks for the kind words guys but it's no big deal really. If I have it I will scan and post it - only takes a few minutes. The biggest problem I have sometimes is simply finding the darn stuff. Must improve my index system :D

David. I did originally want to post the articles as pdfs but the file sizes I got exceeded this boards limit (5MB I think) How do you get yours so small.

Magic! :)

What I do is I combine the JPG's in Acrobat to create a single file for each article. The file size ends up being about the size of the combined original JPG's. But the PDF at this point is nothing more than a package of raster files. If you ask Acrobat to "reduce file size" (in the Document menu), it will examine the contents of the raster images and vectorize them. In the case of B&W text it is quite efficient at making compressed images like JPG's even lighter once vectorized. The size of the file reduces to about 40% of the original.

The PDF's end up having a bit of a "bleed" in the text due to the JPG compression but I was able to upload all three articles in one shot as they were under the 6 MB limit combined.

Are you scanning directly into JPG or into TIF or PDF? If you scan into PDF, you can still reduce the file but it might start off being reasonably light (unless the scan quality settings are set high)
