What plane is this???

1 Attachment(s)
I received this plane as a retirement gift. It has a fiberglass fuse and sheeted/painted wings. I has pneumatic retracts and an OS 60FSR engine. The engine has 3 needles valves and inflight mixture control. The long tuned pipe is under the plane centered.

What is it and what is it worth???

All I know is it sure flys like it's on rails.....

Thanks

Very nice old timey Pattern plane. Love the old Kraft wheels. If lite enough should be an outstanding flyer, by the look.

It's not an Aurora, but looks like it belongs in the Aurora or Blue Angel family...

My 1st guess was a beetle, but without comparing I might be wrong.

Nice airplane! I would have graciously accepted it too.

I think it's a Patricia. Made by Bob Smith.

Well, it appears that it sure was. That goes back some 5 years! Good research.

The stab and elevators on this plane seem unusual. It appears that the elevators continue into the stab tips - unusual for a classic.

On the FK SBA Speeda plans only the rudder does not have the cap piece http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_7510820/tm.htm I think the “TheShirt” Speeda has a ding on the stab that makes it look like the elevator does not have a cap. I changed the rudder and ailerons on mine so they are like my Blue Angel. The Blue Angel and Speeda are two of my favorite designs from the classic days along with my Howard Engineering Taper Wing Kwik Fli. Like my Tipo too!!!

My FK SBA Speeda done in BA colors is below.

I think Tony is right. I'd go with a Patricia as well.

No, I’ve been in a building funk lately!

????, you lost me on that, you mean you want a Patricia? The model shown is a FK SBA Speeda.

RE: What plane is this???

No I don't want a Patricia, I was just agreeing with Tony as to what I thought it was. Don't ask me to bet on it as I would probably lose!

On second inspection, I think Mike might be correct. If one looks carefully at the right stab, one can barely make out the deflected elevator or at least the break between elevator and tip. The arrangement seems conventional on this side. On the left side however, it is harder to see. The break in the left does appear to be a dent after all. Of course, TheShirt would be able to easily confirm this.

If we're going to continue guessing it might be a Patricia, we're going to need some photos. To me, it has Speeda all over it.

Someone must have been inspired with the original Tiporare box photo on the finish of this model. The rainbow colors are popular but I don't know that I've ever seen a finish so similar to the original Tipo scheme. Here's a "mini" copy of that scheme for reference.

RE: What plane is this???

I think it is both.... FK just copied existing designs and renamed them (for whatever reason). Career = Curare; SBA = Blue Angel; Speeda = Patricia
I'll have to dig out a photo of the original Patricia just to be sure. The Patricia was a Japanese design that appeared in the mid-late '70s.
Nice looking airplane, by the way!

RE: What plane is this???

Will,

that's interesting. I was under the impression that the model was called the "SBA Speeda" and was a copy (albeit not identical) of the Blue Angel. But perhaps the abbreviation SBA stands for "Super Blue Angel" and there might be no Speeda part to it.

Mike, perhaps your second BA build is actually not an SBA but is a Speeda/Patricia instead. Does that make sense?

David.

The FK SBA Speeda in a knock off of the Blue Angel. I have them sitting side by side and the Blue Angel and the SBA Speeda do not look like a Patricia.

Here is what a Patricia looks like.

RE: What plane is this???

I guess those threads clear things up.

Will, what is your reference for saying that SBA = BA and Speeda = Patricia in the FK lineup?

The model here is definitely a BA copy and by all accounts appears to be the SBA Speeda. Mike should be quite clear on this considering the amount of time he spent on both the BA and the Speeda.

Personally, I see little resemblance with the Patricia - canopy and vertical are quite different. Let the record show that FK's BA copy is called the SBA Speeda. (I still think that the SBA probably stands for Super Blue Angel) :D

David, not the tipo box, but the original SPEEDA Box.
