RE: YS .60 FR
Hi Pat,
don't know if you have a short or long stroke but here's the LS manual. The FR and FS were only different in their exhaust locations. Hope this helps, David. |
RE: YS .60 FR
The 60 has a round head and is the short stroke, the 61 has a square head and is the long stroke, they both tune the same. I always had good luck with K&B 1L plug in my YS 60 and 61.

Pat here is the manual for the 60 FR/FS Shortstoke’s (Round heads) |
RE: YS .60 FR
all you have to know is that this engine needs 30 per cent nitro, because it s a low compression engine... low compression engine runs smoother, like gas engine runs smoother on cars versus diesel engines.. but to make the ignition properly, you need more octan grade... or nitromethane for a methanol fuel...
if you don t use that mix, it will stall at mid range because it will enrich... best plug is enya n 3.. the pump setting is the screw almost shut.... as the rpm are very high, prop must be an 11/7 and the header must be shorter than for the other engine... check on mac products trim chart.. this is undoubtly the most powerful classic pattern engine ever made, and very easy to set up if you know the tricks i ve explained... and reliable... take care of you engine, there will be no more of it s kind!!!! |

YS .60 FR
My Dad differs...our Blue Angel world champion replica had dozens of first flight witnesses. We ran the brand new motor for 4 - 5 minutes on the ground with an APC 12 x 8 and the old school Hatori muffler only needing high speed needle adjustment with 15% Cool Power fuel.. Second run, first flight...8 minutes of cool. -does not need 30% -does not need a pipe -generally runs out of the box -Is the most powerful classic pattern engine! BECHIP (B.E. "Chip" Dose IV) |
RE: YS .60 FR
The early YS shortstrokes (pre-1983) had a very tight fit at TDC and required significant ground running before a reliable needle setting could be achieved (sometimes as much as 1 hour). They were higher compressed than any other engine at the time and the ONLY engine I've ever owned which would start WITHOUT a glo igniter (just fuel and compression). You could not reliably start the engine without a glo-igniter, but I had my first 2 'FRs' start without a glo-igniter attached on several occasions. The first time was a BIG surprise, fortunately I had a good grip on the airplane. The YS FR/FS engines were the best short-stroke pattern engines ever made (IMHO).

RE: YS .60 FR
BECHIP, i agree. i just used 10% or so fuel on my 1st few YS .60 test runs and the power astounded me. scalding power and rpms.

RE: YS .60 FR
Will, how do you know the year of manufacture? a recent .60 i acquired is too tight to turn over, it is very strong at tdc.

RE: YS .60 FR
Gentlemen,
Please suggest a newer ARF for my inherited YS-60 FR with header and tuned pipe. It is still soft mounted on a rough 9 lb. classic pattern plane from estimated circa 1990. Found by my father in a Seattle garage sale years ago. The motor ran a few times with 10% Cool power for me but seemed to enrichen in flight and quit. It will need some TLC to find needle and pump pressure settings, at 2600 MSL airfield. Would like a fun, symetrical wing ARF with room for pipe in the belly or low cost muffler suggestion, if pipe not used. |
