Look for classic pattern builder
I have a original MK Blue Angel .60 kit and I am looking for someone to build it for me. I live in greater Chicago area. Can anybody help? Thanks
|
RE: Look for classic pattern builder
The time required to build and finish one of those beauties is nothing to sneeze at. You may find someone here willing to do it but I'd imagine your best bet might be to get a professional builder to do it.
I'd also venture that the build cost would be nothing to sneeze at... :) David. |
RE: Look for classic pattern builder
Thanks david.
Where do I find professional builder? Any advise? Thanks Jin |
RE: Look for classic pattern builder
Jin give me a call at 334-444-4097. May be able to help you out. I'm building a lot of airplanes from that period. Three Kaos' and two Tiger Tail IV's on the table now, all from plans.

RE: Look for classic pattern builder
Maybe a good idea to copy all parts at once, so , this kit is saved as well.
|
RE: Look for classic pattern builder
what stage of building are you looking for?
framed, covered, painted, ready to fly etc. I am on the left coast so it might be better to find somone closer to you but i might be interested in doing it for you if the return shipping could be worked out Dave jr. |
RE: Look for classic pattern builder
I have bought my Curare .40 build as an ARF,
The problem was, he did that work so cheap, and so good and nice, that I could never do it that well... Totally build, including kit, new, about 200US$..... |
RE: Look for classic pattern builder
There are a lot of good builders in the Chicago area. Contact Rusty Dose (who seems to be banned from these pages presently) as he knows most or all of the pattern builders/fliers in the Chicago area. Good Luck - very nice airplane and a great kit - please have the builder make templates or at least trace all the parts during the build.

Here are some pics of the kit that I have. I will love if someone wants to copy all parts and the plan to preserve the legacy. However I do want this one build for myself to fly. Right now I just do not know anybody that I can trust. I receive some of your advises and I really appreciate it.

Someone has to get hold of this and make templates and plans accessable... Brian |
RE: Look for classic pattern builder
Indeed Brian. I will make sure the plan copied and I will let whoever build this plane to document each part. I flew one of this plan when I was little and remember felt like fallen in love and all of a sudden she is nowhere to be found.... I hope someone can make many copy of it and bring her back to life so more people can enjoy it.

RE: Look for classic pattern builder
MK Blue Angel 60 kit is extremely rare these days. It would be kínd of sad to build the actual kit when it is so rare. But I hope You will get it built (or built from copies if the balsa/ply in the kit) by some good builder. It is one of my favorite classic pattern planes. I have Carolina Custom Aircraftshort kit of Blue Angel 60 and that isfine also.

I have Carolina Custom Aircraft short kit of Blue Angel 60 and that is fine also. /Bo These kits are selling solidly at about $300, just they way you presently have it and in these hard financial times. They can go, without surprize to the members here, up to $500 and over. Reason isn't only because they are not around, but because they are awsome kits to BUILD. The design is great, but the enginering in the kit just makes it so much fun to build. If all you're looking for is a Built flying Blue Angel, the short kit Is logical. If you're looking for a classic pattern plane to fly and not neccesarily a Blue Angel, there are some out there available RTF from individuals. Just gotta keep looking in the classifieds here. Singapore Hobbies in China, who has the only listing of old MK kits (even though there not available) had a built 60 size MK plane (I'm pretty sure it was a BA but not certain) now that was listed over $2000. Good deals are around. My MK Aurora in my avatar came built w/ a Hanno, matching pipe, installed radio gear and the transmitter for $450. I just had to look 10 years til I ran across one! (Thanks again for the lead Chuck!) The first day @ the field someone offered me $1500 for it. turned them down. DM |
RE: Look for classic pattern builder
I just thought to myself, Spring is here and the flying season is just begining for most people. If you're not in a rush, maybe looking for a builder toward the end of October would attract more attention.

RE: Look for classic pattern builder
[X(] Wow, you have memory of an elephant David !
Yes I did. It came from Texas but I cant remember where, my memory is the mouse. I still cant get over that plane. Its like 8178 built it. The shipping killed me. It was more than the plane, but I did end up with a plane of a life time. Also found an MK Aurora kit for $450, funny huh. Still have the kit, just waiting to move to the states! DM |

RE: Look for classic pattern builder
I would think you could acquire the short kit and then sell the real kit for enough money to pay a builder to build the short kit.

RE: Look for classic pattern builder
David,
That is a good idea. But I do not know how to make it work. All I know is to professionally build (painted) cost around a couple thousand dollars and I don't know who will make this deal with me. I receive a lot of advises from this forum and I appreciate every one of it. Thanks you all. Jin |
RE: Look for classic pattern builder
Honestly, If I were seriously looking to get THE best build for an MK kit -or any balsa kit- and I had the funds to do so, I would keep pestering Mike (8178) to do it. He is the only one that really comes to mind for knowing that whatever the amount paid, I'd feel like I got more than my moneys worth. I dont think anyone hear would argue about that.
Check his build.... http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_3973867/tm.htm the guys a machine I started looking over that build again, for ten minutes... an hour went by! I think that thread got a few of us to step up our game a few notches. DM |
RE: Look for classic pattern builder
a couple of thousand should generate some interest. But there would be 100's of hours to produce a fully painted version though, so it would work out to $4-5 an hour even at that amount.

RE: Look for classic pattern builder
David & Jin,
that is in fact quite accurate. I actually agreed to build and finish a pattern design for someone and can attest to the fact that the "hourly" rate to do a build pales in comparison to what one might earn by doing regular work. Even at a couple of grand (I didn't charge that much), as David mentions, the time involved to "personally" build and finish a model of the caliber of a BA is in the 100-150 hour time frame. Needless to say, one does it as a labour of love and perhaps because of the opportunity to tackle and build a kit like the BA. There are efficiencies to be gained but that requires much time, experience and facilites. These factors and attributes are what allow pro builders like Dave Guerin to pull off a model like this in a few weeks. I believe a regular glass/foam build for Dave might take 6-10 weeks working on it more or less full time. I have no idea what he charges. David. |
RE: Look for classic pattern builder
The challenge is finding a builder that likes to build in wood and is also a good finisher and loading the goodies. You may find a builder, a seperate finsher and a yet different loader of electronics/mechanicals.
It is not unusual for a high quality builder charge $1750 to complete an ARC, and $2250+ for a fiberglass/foam kit. Some charge by the hour and provide a detailed time and materials estimate and delivery time frame. Rusty Dose team Futaba |
RE: Look for classic pattern builder
The mods must really have it in for Rusty Dose. Full on dis, huh? This is the type of crap that makes guys move on to other internet forum groups. Pretty small.

RE: Look for classic pattern builder
Chris,
did Rusty post just before you did and after my post? I got an informative PM from him but it appears that he is still unable to post regularly on the forum. He seems active over on RCG. Now that they have a classic pattern forum, we'll probably end up splitting time on both sites. I kinda liked it when it was simple, one place to go to, but change is inevitable. David. |
RE: Look for classic pattern builder
Hi David,
When he posts it'll show on the "last post" counter but his message will not show up. If you go to his profile you can see that he posts regularly, but I've seen nothing on the board. Chris... |

Chris, I knew this situation was happening a few months ago but had no idea Rusty was still posting here. I assumed he had moved to the other forum completely. We correspond there regularly. can other rcu members see his posts here? might be an interesting topic. |
RE: Look for classic pattern builder

RE: Look for classic pattern builder
Hi,
I am located in the Chicagoland area and have over 30 years experience building and flying RC aircraft. I have built several MK kits over the years and I would be willing to build this plane for you. I have recently painted a Dirty Birdy .60 for Rusty Dose and other pattern guys in the Chicagoland area. I am currently working on a Phoenix 8 and plan on attending Rusty's contest in May. I can get several referrals for you. I have built a couple of the .25 sized versions of the Blue Angel back in the 80's. I would also suggest maybe taking the extra time to copy the parts and try to make a couple of planes and keep the original kit intact? Just an idea. Send me a PM if you are interested. Thanks and good luck! |
RE: Look for classic pattern builder
Someone earlier mentioned the plans. I have a pdf of original line drawn plans for .60 Blue Angel
PM if interested. Chuck |

RE: Look for classic pattern builder
I am currently actively moderating this forum and will spend as much time taking care of the forum. I started moderating this forum a couple of months ago and am now just getting up to speed on what has to be done here. I do not have control over what has happened in the past. RCKen is the Community Moderator and has that say-so and until I get totally up to what is going on here, I will rely on him to give me direction where needed.
In the mean time, I've been looking over Rusty's posts and have released most of the recent ones, working back in date. As I said, I do not have any say so on his situation, that is between him and RCKen. When and if that situation gets settled, I would assume that things will go back to normal. Please be patient as I get caught up here, and thanks for understanding. CGRetired. |
