RE: Dave Brown Ilusion
Well guys, today Rusty Dose flew his Tipo 750 through the P sequence at the St. Charles, IL (Chicago) contest. It was awesome just to see the trim pass. Literally looks like a bullet piercing the air. I teased him for using an APC prop and not a Rev Up 11 x 7.5, but still in all, was really fun to see.

The Tipo 750
The photos show my Tipo 750 originally built by Dick hanson (the creator) somewhere around 1982/83 and recently painted and finished by Dave Guerin. The model is finished similar to Dave Brown's original, fiffering in the explicit wingtip and bottom of wing scheme...but pretty close. The model is powered by a YS .60 short stroke (round head) and weighs just over 8 pounds. The model was test flown the Friday before the Chicagoland Classic Pattern Championships (see attached PDF) and after a few flights that it is a really terrific model, particularly rolling manuevers. After the contest flew most of the P-11 sequence and decided that I would fly it the following weekend for the FVAC pattern contest. P-11- I flew the Tipo in 2/4 rounds and had a ball. Understand that the plane flies 100+ mph, is very load (APC 11 x 9 and Hatori pipe) and is just about impossible to keep it in the box! Snaps...well, a work in progress. 30 years of progress...Dave Snow's Spark and the Tiporare. Rusty Dose Team Futaba |

Mike here are several pictures Rusty took of the Tipo and Spark nose to nose, about 30 years of evolution in pattern planes.

I know a few answers. Yup, the contest in CA with the LA-1's was Chula Vista in November '88. (it was also my honeymoon, probably not a good idea in retrospect, hence that was wife #1)
Mike, I'm pretty sure you had a Challenge 2 (your special really square canopy version :-) ). I think it was the '85 season that you flew that one. Didnt you fly the NewWave 3 that I slowly built for you in '87. |
RE: Dave Brown Ilusion
That sounds right Mike. I remember that canopy.....looked like a loaf of bread :-)
The NewWave was one of the best planes I have ever owned. I remember that being just a dream to fly. Wasn't really built to survive mid-airs, but was otherwise terrific. |
RE: Dave Brown Ilusion
LOL. Thats right. I forgot that one went away in a mid-air. Was it at the Cincy contest? You probably borrowed my original NewWave and beat me with it.....again. :-) I think you won more contests with that airplane than I did.
