OS .61 RF header question
 

Does anyone know of an lowrise header for the OS .61 RF? A Hanno Special header has a lower rise than the standard offset header but I hate to pull that from a nib Hanno.

David, what height offset from center do you need? ½ inch maybe? What’s this going into?

On the Mac's website there is a page listed special application headers, scroll down and you will see the rear exhaust "fuse top" headers. They have .5", 1", 1.5" and the left hook headers listed there. (I think that OS header you got with the Hanno should be about a .5" offset).

Paul, this is going in a Henry Pioran Eclipse. It is a well used and beat up plane that I acquired at the Perry swapmeet for $100. I pulled the ragged YS 61 and dropped in an OS RF. The options are limited due to the back plate soft mount. Working on photos now.

I just measured one of my OS headers and it's actually a 1" offset rather than .5"...Sorry, my bad...

Here are some photos. The plane has quite a thrust angle to it. Any header would need to be bent back inline a bit.

Sweet Dave!!

I like an articulated header for a couple of reasons...Especially when using a soft engine mount I feel it helps dampen the vibration through out the whole pipe system, it's less stress on the header mount which can crack. It makes tuning a lot easier especially if you have some spare header tubing. Last but not least, it really helps with the alignment issues that your facing here... ;)

Here are some photos...You basically just put another cut in the header and add an additional silicone coupler...I'm doing this to all my headers...

You can get the coupler tubing from McMaster/Carr and the aluminum from Aircraft Spruce..

Hey Chuck,
WHat's the airplane?? Articulated headers work great and save you lots of headaches in custom installations. As far as headers failing due to soft mount systems - I've never had it happen (broken a few in some ugly, vertical landings [:o]). I have an MK Super VR-90 with a Hanno Special in it. The header had more than 500 flights on it before I installed it in the VR-90 which now has 920 flights and counting. Back in the days of hard mounted engines and pipes I did have some headers fracture at the tube - faceplate junction.
