Looking for .61 engine options for Dirty Bird
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in; widows: 2; orphans: 2"><font color="#000000"><font face="Arial, Verdana, sans-serif"><font size="2" style="font-size: 9pt"><span style="font-style: normal"><span style="font-weight: normal">So thanks to Gary Courtney and Tony Coberly I entered my first BPA event this weekend at the RCRC in Huntsville, AL. it was completely unplanned as my son and I wanted to fly but the field was closed unless you entered the competition. Tony twisted my arm and I figured I would be the entertainment flying our rebuild Royal Air 40T. The trainer is not bad but Gary took pity on me and brought me a great Dirty Bird pattern ship on Sunday. It needs to be finished, never flown but was built. I have the radio gear, the main retracts (need a nose wheel retract), I even have a tank and aluminum spinner too. Only thing I'm missing is a .61 engine right now.
I looked around towers and I see they no longer carry a OS .61, just a .65. I saws .61s in magnum, thunder tiger, and super tigers. So I like OS, but size seems too big, and I don't want to over load this plane and I would like to keep it like it was designed originally. Price is key for my limited budget, even used would be good, if anyone has one that would work too. Thanks</span></span></font></font></font></p> |
RE: Looking for .61 engine options for Dirty Bird
I have had good luck with the Magnum 61, as well have a couple of others flying the Classic Pattern models. Good pricing too.

RE: Looking for .61 engine options for Dirty Bird
I’d have to say look at the Magnum 61 and Evo 60NX.
Two good economical and powerful power plants available today, both are good choices for today’s Classic Pattern aircraft. |
RE: Looking for .61 engine options for Dirty Bird
I like the Thunder Tiger Pro engines; NOT made in china:D. But they are a bit heavier than the other two mentioned.

RE: Looking for .61 engine options for Dirty Bird
IMO a classic pattern airplane needs to have a classic engine. I would be looking for a Rossi, Webra, Supertiger X or Kraft .61

ASP 61 at hobbyking a very powerful engine and price is awsome !
You will not regret buying one , also have a friend here in México who is selling a NIB rossi 60 $ 350 dls or MVVS 61 $251 dls. stupid power on both :D |
RE: Looking for .61 engine options for Dirty Bird
Ive got a new ASP. 61 (no box), $55 and its yours.
|
RE: Looking for .61 engine options for Dirty Bird
$55 is a great deal.
Magnum/ASP would be my 1st choice of current motors for Bridi airplanes (except the Super Kaos- the newer moters are longer. There isn't enough room to properly use retracts as designed.) designed before the Mama Mia. Brian |

ORIGINAL: alcarafa ASP 61 at hobbyking a very powerful engine and price is awsome ! You will not regret buying one , also have a friend here in México who is selling a NIB rossi 60 $ 350 dls or MVVS 61 $251 dls. stupid power on both :D I've got one of those Rossi's. I use it for warbird pylon racing in a 6lb airplane. Very fast. The cool thing about the Rossi is that the carbs are so well designed. Mine bump starts 90% of the time, idles and transitions flawlessly and has a ton of power. I have it coupled with a JMP pipe that was intended for an OS 77 DF engine. Spins an APC 10X10 16,800 on the ground. It's a real kick being able to taxi a 150 mph airplane down the taxi way to the runway and then taxi it back lol. |
RE: Looking for .61 engine options for Dirty Bird
There is a reason the Rossi engines are still in production, using pretty much the very same design and materials as they were 30 years ago; they got it right and then didn't mess with it!
Go Rossi!! Jim |
RE: Looking for .61 engine options for Dirty Bird
Excellent feedback, as luck would have it Tower sent me a coupon and they have free shipping so I'm thinking of getting the Magnum. </p> |
RE: Looking for .61 engine options for Dirty Bird
I think the previous comments are all pointing in a good direction. I on the other hand can tell you what to definitely NOT put in a DB. I put a K&B 61 Twister in mine, and I have been regretting it ever since. I think a Rossi would be brilliant in a DB, or a good solid OS 61 SF. Just one man talking. Josh</p> |
RE: Looking for .61 engine options for Dirty Bird
I agree...
The Dirty Birty wants to go fast.... REALLY FAST! I saw a thread in here somewhere where the owner of a (Chinese ;) ) engine replaced factory bearings and picked up a significant increase in rpms. Imagine doing this with your DB and adding a tuned pipe or Jett Tuned Muffler!!!! Definitely makes it competitive with the Rossi's and Webra's... (Just not my new Super Tigre SERIE X .61 RE. [8D] )When I build a DB in the distant future, this is exactly what I plan to do... |

I've been selling my Rossi's off one by one.
I have a "NIB" 61 RE FIRE with a pipe and custom made flexible header. As was said, they don't make anything better. Interested? Charles |
RE: Looking for .61 engine options for Dirty Bird
Yes!

RE: Looking for .61 engine options for Dirty Bird
Josh,
What problems did you have with the K&B twister? I ran the old K&B/Lee design for a long while and had no problems, but that was a different engine. Thanks, Jim |
RE: Looking for .61 engine options for Dirty Bird
Awesome Jim!!!
I just scored big elsewhere... I wish one of these would pop up when I have the hard cash... ;) Brian |
RE: Looking for .61 engine options for Dirty Bird
Brian,
You ain't gettin' this'un!:D Jim |
RE: Looking for .61 engine options for Dirty Bird
I have Rossi's and a OPS 60 RE talk about power houses!!
The ASP or Magnum (basically the same built in the same factory just different cases) will work fine. Put a Rossi header and pipe on it and hang on you will have a great running engine for a bargain price. We are coming into swap meet season. Go to some of them. I picked up a NIB Rossi 61RE even had the Rossi glow plug in the box for $75.00. I bought a standard side exhaust Rossi 60 for $50.00 I had a header and pipe. |
RE: Looking for .61 engine options for Dirty Bird
Your being silly if you don't give due consideration to the OS LA .65. A simple, easy, hard working, low priced, reliable, budget engine. It's lighter, stronger and cheaper then almost anything yet OS quailty. Tower sells them too.
|
RE: Looking for .61 engine options for Dirty Bird
The ASP was a pure knockoff of the OS FSR series, short stroke and needing a pipe. He would make the plane fly the way it was intended. The Rossi would be my other pic, will last forever, and again a pipe engine. IMHO.

RE: Looking for .61 engine options for Dirty Bird
If you are looking for good power at a reasonable price try a Supertigre .90. They are a .60 sized engine weigh the same as alot of .60's and run great on no more than 10% nitro. You have the added bonus of a wider variety of propellers also. The muffler is adjustable so it will fit almost any plane. Good luck!

RE: Looking for .61 engine options for Dirty Bird
Hi,
One of the top fliers here in Sweden in 1970th had two Dirty Birdies with Webra Speed 61 side exhaust with Dynamix carburator and Minivox pipe. Really fast. Later he added Webra Speed 61 "Racing" rear exhaust with pipe. Webra Speed 61 was the king of the hill in 1970th at least for many European top flyers like Hanno Prettner and Wolfgang Matt. I used in my pattern planes in the 1970th Rossi 61 FI RC (side exhaust) with original Rossi pipe and also Rossi 61 FI RE (rear exhaust) also with original pipe. They worked very well with good power. I had servo controlled needle on both engines. Although Webra closed their doors last year it is still possible to find new in box Webra Speed 61 with Dynamix carburator and suitable pipes. Rossi 60 or 61 side or 61 rear exhaust is still in production so it is no problem to find such engines. /Bo |
