Jim Oliver-

For some reason your pictures of your Escape are no longer visible on theis thread... Could you repost them?

For that matter... If anyone has pics of their Escapes I would love to see them....

Really well done finish - paint or film on the wings? How did you do the lettering?

RE: Slowly setting up to build a Bridi Escape.

Speed-panzer,

Silkspan and Sig dope on fuse, Sig dope on canopy. The Sig was mixed to "sorta" march the U.C. colors.
Ultra Coat on vertical stab/rudder, horizontal stab/elev. and wings.

Letters and numbers were cut by: http://www.cfcgraphics.com/

Hey, I use CFC Graphics, He did a great job on my Blue Angel. No one else could match some of the font found on pictures of the original Blue Angel.

Jim,

What did you use for an engine mount?

For the life of me I can't figure out how Joe bolted the top of the mount to the FW given that there isn't one at that height! I'd be inclined to changing the design of that FW and front end...

RE: Slowly setting up to build a Bridi Escape.

David-

The top bolt holes using the Bridi and Dave Brown mounts are about 1/4" from the bottom of the top of the FW. There certainly is no problem with changing the configuration to your personal satisfation.

I'll be using the 3/16" CF endgrain balsa sandwhich for my firewall- much like my SKaos. Sure beats the 5/8" ply FW provided with the kit! I will be changing it a bit to give more mounting area while relieving for the header as well... This will open up more mount options as well.

(I think you're the one that gave me this idea a long time ago...)

Hope this helps.

.
Brian,

I replaced all of the formers in my XLT with Nomex Honeycomb composite and knocked off alot of weight . . . Also make sure you replace the wing sheeting with 1/16" contest balsa.

RE: Slowly setting up to build a Bridi Escape.

I used a Dave Brown mount, with a bit of the material removed to clear the header. I replaced the kit firewall with a small piece of
7 ply 1/4" ply material, about half the size of the fuse cross section. I used 1/4" balsa to finish out the fuse cross section contour.

Not as high tech as these other guys, but about 1/4 the weight of the kit firewall. At a total weight, dry, of 7lb. 10oz., I'm not unhappy.

Most definitely!

Did you use regular epoxy with your CF, or Hysol?

With the Super Kaos done, it is time to get serious here...

Primary Objective: Keep the Escape at 7lbs.

I wonder how many people are getting bored with me. So I am thinking I'll poke around and pm friends with questions. After that, I'll build the Escape and take pics. I will do this until finished.

Then I will post the end results on a new and more centered thread without so many rabbit trails. Better idea?

(although, I have to tell you, If I didn't post my SK thread as I went along, I would never have ended up with such a successful end result!)

Hey Brian,

Just keep the thread going here. The short "Rabbit Trails" keeps it interesting........:D

Pre-build Prep!

I have pulled the contents out to take a full look at what I have. The wood is old and heavy. It will be replaced with fresh contest balsa, composite material, and new hardware where needed.

I was supposed to send out the canopy to have a new mold made so everyone could build one of these if they wanted. I have been talking to a reputable manufacturer. It has been hard to let it go and trust it to make it safe. I would like to have canopies for a Great Escape or an XLT in the future. I have emailed Blue Jay a few times on the XLT canopy. They will not return my emails. According to Jim Oliver, who has all three kits (lucky dog!), the canopies seem to be universal between the three airplanes.

Step 1:

Get more lighting!

I think one thing holding me back from producing a great example of a Bridi airframe is a lack of good lighting. I will put up some foam, 2x2 lumber. and some sheetrock and build a room for my projects in my basement. I will add some ceiling and laminate flooring. I plan to install some long florescent lights on the ceiling to fight shadows caused by my "slender" figure.

In the meantime, I will be adding some good balsa to my collection in order to produce a 7lb Joe Bridi Escape!

I'll be spending a lot of my time prepping for this and flying my new Super Kaos. We will see you in a while!

Brian

I thought this was interesting...

I thought I'd set my Escape canopy on top of my Super Kaos. The result is an eye opener!

If this picture needed to be captioned, I think I'd caption it this way:

"When I grow up..."
