RE: Modified Taurus restoration.
Chino,
I see the pictures of your plane and read the subject of the thread: Modified Taurus restoration. First, congrats, nice job I wish you many successful flights. My two cents about the Taurus, To distinguish a Taurus from another pattern ship you have to know all remarkable basic design details of a Taurus. To qualify a Taurus, or a modified, you have to find back these remarkable details or, signs of these of what is left. Flying and building Taurus for many years, translating original plans to the metric system, I know all details. Result in the past was I did recover one of the forgotten Taurusses of Ed Kazmirski and did reconstruct that plane, See my thread : Redesign and reconstruction of the Oldest Taurus on Earth. I also did recognize the mixed up Taurus of Ed as used in Genk Belgium after the estate planes were sold by Chuck Noble on e-bay. Your plane. Wings Remarkable plan form of the Taurus but sheeted, If 19% thick? Yes Taurus, maybe wing kit. Mounting not with rubber bands, modified. Stab and elevator Plan form Taurus, but again sheeted and no threaded hinges. Fin and rudder? Not yet! Nose? not yet! First the remarkable basic design facts to distinguish a commercial Taurus from other pattern ships. Taurus, tricycle landing gear with brakes on mains Streamlined low drag nose for propeller efficiency Long tail boom to dampen elevator reeds servo input. Internal low drag elevator coupling Remarkable tricycle decalage for full multi pattern flying. Swept back of hinge line of the rudder, rudder/fin like a shark Hooooooooo. Now it is going wrong. The decalage of your plane is of a taildragger! I see a hatch above the tank! I do not find that long tail boom! I do see an external elevator coupling! The nose is missing a lot of material and is much to blunt, scratch built I do see an Orion fin and rudder!!!!!!!! The pane is an Orion "modified", in total overview. Scratch built fuselage based on the Orion, distances, layout and tail dragger decalage. External elevator linking and the stab is placed more backwards to enlarge the horizontal tail moment probably direction one of Taurus’ remarkable details. Modified canopy and turtle deck to give the plane another "sport" look but more drag. Removable tank hatch as used in the Orion and blunt high drag, so “no Kazmirski” nose. Chino, let me know what you think about this. Success the modified Orion restauration is finished I see. Successful flights!! Cees |

Taurus, Orion, whatever. It is a wonderful old airplane that you have done a great restoration of. Thanks for sharing.

Jim I didn't expect the post of Chino his Orion was finished and did find this thread http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_10...anchor/tm.htm# So I edit my post after it was placed to wish him good luck. RE: Modified Taurus restoration.
Unlike Cees, I too think that you have done a nice job of a modified, stock Taurus. The fin/rudder outline has only been slightly tweaked, but it is Taurus, the internal structure, what can be seen, is certainly Taurus, diagonal doubler sheet and thick triplers. The removeable tank cover is a personal mod, certainly no standard Orion or Taurus shows it. A good idea, but it might lead to a slightly less stiff front end. Bolt on wing was a common mod, even back in the day. I like the wing fairings too, again you could only fit them with a bolt on wing. Should be a nice, fun model. Could you update later on weights and flight report?

RE: Modified Taurus restoration.
Interesting. There was a post on this thread around 11:30 AM today by the person that made post # 7 that is not visible on this thread. Wonder what causes that?

RE: Modified Taurus restoration.
I can see Post#7 by Taurusflyer. It's visible now. His posts always seems to come and go on RCU.

RE: Modified Taurus restoration.
Really neat restoration, Chino.
I like the "period modified" models of the Classic era. That one is a good looking version and thanks for the pictures. Chris... |

RE: Modified Taurus restoration.
Very nice! I wonder how old it is, it might be the oldest (mod) Taurus on Earth.

ORIGINAL: chino_2005 Right now I don´t know if it is the oldest mod Taurus or Orion on earth. :D Chino, The video is nice shot of the plane and of very good quality! Can you tell me amount of MB? Orion? Taurus? Of course it is no point at all only for our historical way of looking at the plane it iis interesting to have attention for it in this period. If you want we can make a more detailed comparison trying to reconstruct the builders way of building in the past. The know-how is here, the tools we have to make. If you want first of all is, make a new picture on certain distance of the plane. I already did make mine. Keep an eye on the plane or hold it in position wih your hands!! Location of the camera: Camere in top axle from "about" the CG. Distance 254 cm is 100 inch measured from bottom of the plane near that CG. By making these pictures and compare we eliminate most of cushion effect. My way of thinking about, is it a Taurus or is it a Orion? Look a the movie Tora Tora Tora, we can make a Harvard look like a Zero if we want. So we first look at basic proportions of the fuselage because these are the key for the flight characteristics of the "We all know Taurus". after that we keep in mind there are other possibilities: Taurus with short tailcone, modification for proportional or Orion Let me know what you think about this. RE: Modified Taurus restoration.
Interesting, it did it again. The summary page showed the last post on 11/29/11 at 6:26AM and the post is missing.

RE: Modified Taurus restoration.
ORIGINAL: chino_2005 Right now I don´t know if it is the oldest mod Taurus or Orion on earth. :D You might as well at least "claim" that it is. ;) Regardless, it's a cute little plane that flies great. The tank window is interesting...at least you can always be sure the fuel line is attached, (on the outside at least). Taurus or Orion, it is highly modified from whatever it was as a kit, but it is a pretty plane. A lot of thought and work went into modifying it from the original. It would have been quicker to build in its original form. You know, (just a thought), it possibly could have been REPAIRED, or REBUILT to look like that after a major crash...who knows. I would probably have removed the "Cool Power" decal before painting, but maybe you liked it that way. My favorite picture was the one of the landing...looked like a nice touch-down. Duane |
