Calypso cowling
Does anybody know were I might find a Calypso cowl and canopy? I have an old Model Tech Calypso I am in the process of re-doing and they are both too damaged to re-use.
Any help would be appreciated. DP#3 |
RE: Calypso cowling
I've got mine on my plane Dave.
You can take them off my plane and make some molds for both of us? Let me know. Jamie |
RE: Calypso cowling
PM sent to both...

RE: Calypso cowling
Did anyone ever find a source for this cowl? I found a kit with the cowl basically shrunk, cracked, and unuseable. I'd love to find a source for the cowl instead of using my limited fiberglass skills to make one.

RE: Calypso cowling
There are several guys here myself included who can take even damaged parts and fix them well enough to pull a mold from them. In the end it all depends on what you want to put into the airplane.

RE: Calypso cowling
The more I think about this the Calypso and Dalotel 1500 were very close. I just happen to have a mold for the Dalotel cowl. Something to consider.

RE: Calypso cowling
Thanks for responding speedracerntrixie,
I appreciate the offer. I don't know that I will go to the expense of having a mold made. I can carve a foam one and lay up glass over it and dissolve the foam if I have to. I was just hoping that someone made a commercial version that could be purchased and save the trouble. Thanks, Chuck |

I have a new MT Calypso kit and am happy to lend these parts for reproduction if desired. Don at RCAiir might be able to do the glass work for a fee (plus cowl pull costs and shipping) and Keith at Park Flyers could reproduce the canopy. We did exactly this with the cowl and canopy of the MK super chipmunk 120 originals for our e-version project (thread on RCG). David |

Hi David,
My son started this thread in hopes of finding a cowl and a canopy for his Calypso that he had just dinged up !! I found a airplane @ the Perry swap meet and he traded me his parts for the complete airplane that he is now flying !! In saying all of this, I can repair the cowl but still need the canopy ! As I have scratched out a new fuse and will use the wing and tail off of the original airplane. Anybody that could pull some canopy's, I would be interested in buying a couple ... O yeah, the cowl on this one was made out of wood !! Dave. |

If there are 4-5 parties wanting one, then the mold costs could be split among the buyers and would be easier and maybe cheaper. Reproducing canopies is very reasonable and worth doing unless one has vacuum pulling equipment. I'd be interested in a set as these two items are all that's needed to scratch one. I have a Calypso on the bench being built (kit build not MT ARC) and the canopy and cowl could stand being replaced with better quality versions despite work I did on the very shoddy kit cowl (too thin, cracked and poor quality polyester). Given wing and stab cores, the Calypso is one if the easiest planes to build that I've come across. One can even use front and rear foam decks if desired for the fuse top. SRT, I should have added that your glass work is superb and you're welcome to the parts if you'd like to pull molds from them. I'm just happy to send them to anyone who needs or wants them. David |
RE: Calypso cowling
Dave,
We'll figure something out. I'll drop you a line in the evening as I'm on my phone at the moment. Keith should be able to do this if all we need are canopy's. That said, there may very well be a canopy he's already made that might be a very close match. Nothing too special about the long bubble of the Calypso. Take a look at his website (Park Flyer Plastics), maybe there's something there. David PS Nice Calypso! Is that the new or the old? |
RE: Calypso cowling
Guy's
I'm in, I would like a new Cowl also, as the one I have is the El cheep O that comes with the kit. David the one thing you left out about this airplane is how well it fly's. Lil Dave put his radio in the one in the picture and flew it for the first time on Friday before the contest @ Hodges. He was so happy with it, he flew the airplane like he had been flying it for a long time. I got an Email from Jamie Strong about letting someone make a copy of his cowl so it looks like we have the parts, just need some one to make em. PS David,It was the new one we got in Perry !! |
RE: Calypso cowling
I would be more then happy to pull a mold from your existing parts. The only theng that replays in my mind is that to make it worth while we would want a few guys on board. I'm not really looking to make alot of money here, just cover materials and some time. I'm thinking 100.00 for the mold and 25.00 for each cowl. Spead out between 4 or 5 guys its not too bad.

RE: Calypso cowling
I dorked up my Calypso some time back, but he was repairable. I found the Sig 16" teardrop canopy to work very well; you will need to set him in place and figure out how much of the nose and back end of the canopy will have to be cut. Mine looks perfect to the original.

Canopy & Cowl

Canopies and Cowls available... Cores are cut and working on a fuse now to make the turtle deck ... more stuff soon.
The canopy & cowl molds where made from original Calypso parts .. |
Wow, I guess I should have bee spending more time on RCU. My MT Calypso has a crinkled canopy and a cheesy cowl (real dry lay up). I'll be contacting Scott posthaste. Thanks!

Eric,
Sent you a email |
Would the Calypso canopy fit on a Supra Fly 60? I'm fixing one up and all I need now is a new canopy (singahobby.com managed to supply me with a new SF 60 cowling).
