Phoenix 8
 

I recently acquired a Phoenix 8 kit. I am undecided on whether to build it or not. How do the flying characteristics compare to something like a Mach1 or a UFO? What is required for engine? I don’t want to use a pipe. A very nice looking bird and I am tempted to build it>

The P8 was a solid all around performer. Didn't do anything spectacularly well, just good all around flier. It's strength was its good behavior over a wide range of speed (lightly built). Built stock with the stock dihedral the model displayed solid rolling and point rolling.

Build it light tho. Mine came in at 7 1/2 pounds and flew well there

I used OSs andWebras in mine, piped. For no pipe, try the Jett

The P-8 was a good flyer. I've never flew one, but I sure saw a lot of them at the pattern contests back in the 70's and 80's. It has beautiful lines.

The Phoenix 8 was something I always wanted to fly. I think it's one of the best looking of the classic pattern planes. And there's nothing that flies like classic pattern planes.

I recently picked up a P8 kit and I'm collecting parts for it now. There are a few projects ahead of it but this baby is going to be built! What else would you buy one for?

Any classic era .60 or their modern equivalent should fly the pants off that airplane. Mine will have a classic piped Rossi .60 and retracts. There won't be a cooler aircraft at the field. It'll be quick too.

Is this a current kit or one of the old classics? If it is a currently produced kit, where did you get it from?

Bob, you can get the P-8 short kit from Don at Rcaiir, a regular poster here in this forum. I have several of his short kits and they are very very well done. Even better you don't have to wait a year or 2 or 3 to receive the kit. Don can have it to you early next week.

I believe it is one of the old classics. It has been in a older modelers kit collection for many years and the plans and instructions are very yellowed.

Actually I will mount it sideways and run the pipe on the bottom. I have the Rossi .60 side exhaust. I do have a Rossi .61 RE but it's not going on this plane.

Thanks for the input. Although I haven't flowen pattern for many years, the Phoenix looks like it would be a fun airplane.

Well this is weird.
I also just dug a new unfinished Aero Composites Phoenix 8 out of an estate, this weekend. The stab was in the shucks, in the garage, the wings in shucks, in a cornerof a basementthatI cannot describe, and the fuse off on a shelf. The wings are joined but not glassed, and the belly pan has not been found yet. I've got two other pattern ships, but I typically fly the gas stuff, and only get to the pattern guys a couple times a year.
However, one of the pattern ships is also composite, and has a YS60FF on a pipe. I had not flown a pipe until this year ... wow. an 11x10 prop at near 12K on the ground. It certainly hauls the freight. BecauseI have these two operable planes, I was thinking of selling the Phoenix, even though the other two are older and have rash ... but now ... after this thread ... maybe I'll build her.
Or maybe make molds?
So many airplanes, so little time. RCU always makes you think.

I wouldn't bother with molds - it's been done. Don produces fuses and pans as well as cores if needed. If you decide to build it and you need a pan, you can contact him. His RCU handle is Frequent Flyer.
