The work week is over, back on the Cosmos build. Decided mid week to do a little something to the weak lite ply tank floor. Some 5 oz carbon fiber cloth and epoxy strengthened it up quite nicely.

Only able to upload 2 photos at a time. More of the tank floor reinforcement.

A pic of the spoiler details. Might be more than I can handle. Could add 6 months to the project.

Hey David,

Have you given any thought about what you're going to power this beauty with? Maybe one of the new Novarossi's will do the trick for you? Talk about BALLISTIC.................................:D:D

Take care,
David

Since I probably won't fly this much, I decided to stick with the wood engine mount design. It's not easy to find maple so I found a lightweight piece of red oak. With some work I got the right side mount to within 3 grams.

Sorry about the previous photos blacking out the weight. The original is 31 grams, the homemade one is 34 grams. A side by side photo:

I have a few engines in stock to consider 1st. YS 61 and 60's, An OS V (F), my Jett 90 RE is probably too much. But I like the idea of the new YS or the Novarossi.

Better results with the left side mount. 27 grams for the original, 25 for the new one. I may recut the right side.

An initial mockup photo. If I can find a replica tank online, I will glue up the assembly tonight. Unless I can get the wife to record the rest of her tv show.................

Awesome Dave!!

Here is a link to one place that has MK tanks...They don't seem to have the 400cc tank which I think are normally included in most of our kits...

These guys have a lot of MK hardware such as retracts and wheels!! I think they are in the US...Maybe they could order some MK tanks??

Then there is the Tettra line of tanks:

Hi Chuck, Dave,
I would also check Singapore hobbies as they still seem to have a large stock of MK stuff. Unfortunately, MK is now completely out of business. They closed their doors for good last December. Very sad. It would be nice if somebody would purchase the remains of MK and put all their accessories and some/all of their kits back into production... Probably just wishful thinking on my part. RE: MK Cosmos build

PS.
Very nice build, so far. The Cosmos is a very nice flying airplane. I never owned one, but flew 6 contest flights on one belonging to a friend back in 1986. My Joker was grounded due to interference on my frequency (yeah, that did happen back in the pre- 2.4 days :D); so he let me share his Cosmos. It was set up as a tail dragger (we were flying FAI) with a YS 60FR spinning an Asano 11.4 x 10 prop (before APC, too). My scores improved with each flight and I ended up placing a very close 2nd. I always regretted not building one.
David, if you are going to the trouble of scratch building by copying an original kit you should make at least two copies. It is much easier to do it all together. Last year I created 3 kits of the MK Skystar 90. I did 'cheat' and cut the wings and stabs from foam and removed the wood engine mount to allow for a firewall mounted soft mount. The first one is finished and flying and I'm very happy with the results. Plus you can fly your Cosmos as much as you want knowing another 'kit' is still waiting. Once you fly the Cosmos you may rethink your plan to only fly it occasionally.

Doing some trial fitting. Very hard to find a starting point on this fuse.

Finally getting the fuse together. Starting to find wood sizes that I don't have, time to visit Balsa USA.

Very little progress to report. Finally done with my kid's baseball seasons so hopefully back to work on the Cosmos. A photo of the fuse in rough draft condition. Lots of head scratching ahead as I don't have a well documented build thread to copy like my last MK build.

David,

How thicnk are the fuse sides? They look 3/16" in the photo.

RE: MK Cosmos build

I believe they are 3/16". Will confirm later tonight.

I'm back in the building mood and have started again on the Cosmos build. So many things take me away from building. Not sure about uploading here vs shifting the thread to our newer preferred site but will try anyway.

It is easy to move at this point. It would be great to see the build on the other place and you would love the publishing tools that always work. I rarely
stop by here anymore.

Mike, is it that bad here? I see very little activity here so I assume so. There are so many great threads here over the years. Maybe I post in both sites.............
