Ross 61
 

Hey I know that some of us (a lot of us) got the Novarossi Black Beast/Beauty fever. Thought I would post a few pictures for you to look
at of an older Black Beauty that I just came across. The Ross 61, an American made engine. Maybe someone here has a little info
on this engine they would like to share, otherwise enjoy the photos.

Hey Ron,

That's a nice looking engine.......:D The carb actually looks like it was machined from a single piece of aluminum. I'd like to learn more about this engine as well, but given the small carb size and the small exhaust size, I cannot imagine it was much of a powerhouse. However, I could be wrong, it certainly wouldn't be the first time..................LOL

Looks like the carb was cast from the roughness in the opening and the seam line in the back. That's weird. I wonder if you'd pick up any RPMs if you smoothed out the opening?

i know the Ross engines were pretty strong for the time, however they had a tendency to break crankshafts. I do know the company was aware of the problem but I am not sure if there was a later version that corrected the flaw.

Ross 61 engines were strong runners, the exhaust size bear almost nothing in output, its a loop scavenged motor in its standard configuration, they made opposed twins and opposed fours as well, all based on the same design. the engines were used in the twin and four cylinder configuration for powering the space shuttle test models, they had articles in RCM and model builder with Clarence Lee testing them as well.

That is a K&B carb....not known for it's usefulness.
The engine needed a Perry carb in the worst way.

I did a post of this in the glow engines forum. A couple of guys chimed in with some info, a few photos, and a link which has some history
on Ross engines and photos. I have a used Ross 61 as pictured in the link which is in real good shape. Got it off ebay around 2000.

That exhaust port is rather small but the Super Tigre X60 had what looked to be a small exhaust port also and it was a real screamer.
So this thing might be a screamer too. That K&B carb is one heavy chunk of metal and adding to the overall weight of the engine.
I would dump it and try a lager intake Perry carb to get the most out of the engine.

It wasn't my engine I just uploaded the pictures for all to look at. You just missed out on it. When I made the post the first bid was 280 euro but received no
bidders. It was relisted with the end results below. If I would have known earlier that you or someone else was thinking about it I could have posted or sent
a heads up.
